Organizational Unit Overview
The Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement (REDE) is charged with leading research, economic development, and community engagement for East Carolina University. REDE is responsible for research integrity and compliance, administration, and development activities to grow extramurally sponsored activities across ECU. In addition, REDE leads technology transfer, innovation, economic and community engagement initiatives including partnerships with public sector agencies, industry, military, and other organizations. The following offices are part of REDE: Research Administration and Compliance, Engage Research, Research Development, Continuing and Professional Education, Postdoctoral Affairs, Undergraduate Research, Research and Innovation Campus Development, Licensing and Commercialization, National Security and Industry Initiatives, Research Integrity and Compliance Monitoring, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the University and Medical Center Institutional Review Board, and the Small Business and Technology Development Center.
Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to provide data management and analysis for Research, Economic Development and Engagement (REDE). This position will be responsible for managing the relationship between the business and the customer/user by creating and maintaining databases, creating and maintaining research dashboards and applications, and providing data in the form of ecuBIC Reports and other ad hoc reporting as requested. Additionally, this position will assist in training and help inquiries associated with the electronic systems managed by the REDE Data Team.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Research and follow industry trends and technologies in order to recommend, provide, and sustain services that enhance business operations
  • Create and analyze datasets, involving complex conversion of data for analysis from multiple data sources and file formats
  • Provide leadership in the design, installation, implementation and maintenance of applications, dashboards, and reporting tools as well as training end users on new applications, dashboards and tools
  • Oversee customer portfolio of current application/service requests and acts as IT Support for current reporting tools, applications, and data sources
  • Review incoming customer requirements, create test cases, execute testing plans using testing tools and automation and test applications/services developed against the test cases to ensure there are no bugs, requirements are met and applications/services function properly
  • Work collaboratively within the Data Analysis Team, within REDE and across campus to identify opportunities for improvement and prioritize ECU’s business and information needs

Data Analysis – 50%
  • Developing reporting tools
  • Testing reporting tools
  • Implementing reporting tools
  • Maintaining ecuBIC Reporting Tools (Visual Studio SSRS), PI Portal and REDE Research Dashboards (PowerBI, JavaScript, SQL Server Data Tools and/or SQL)

Application Management – 25%
  • Research-related reporting across applications (1. ePirate is our IRB management system which uses JavaScript and SQL, 2. InfoED eTRACS is our pre-and post-award management system which uses JavaScript and HTML, ERS by Maximusis our effort reporting system which uses SQL.)

Process Testing and Improvement – 25%
  • Researching new processes
  • Developing new processes
  • Testing and implementing new processes based on current/future needs of research analytics, such as relating data from our effort reporting system, pre- and post-award management systems, and conflict of interest system
  • Supporting and collaborating with the Data Analytics team regarding high level IT, server, and database support needs of REDE.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Master’s degree in a relevant field of study such as Business Administration, Information Technology, Public Administration, minimum of 2 years’ experience working in analysis, design, and development of database solutions, demonstrated proficiency utilizing SQL, Python, PowerBI, Tableau, JavaScript, and Visual Studio SSRS, demonstrated experience in handling large data sets and relational databases, data management and developing data management strategies, experience with managing tasks, responsibilities and priorities autonomously, strong customer service orientation, ability to work in high-pressure situations, excellent attention to detail, technical experience working with designing, building, installing, configuring, and supporting databases, ability to translate data findings into non- technical terms, high level written and verbal communication skills, high level customer service skills, proven success in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, analytical and problem-solving skills.
