Position Overview

Position Overview:
The University of Kansas, Information Technology Enterprise Systems (ITES) Linux team is seeking an IT Architect to serve in a lead role in the conceptualization, development, and implementation of highly complex, integrated systems and assets supporting campus operations. The architect supervises a team of professional engineers and develops and designs systems to provide optimum solutions to complex projects. The ideal candidate is someone who likes to design and document systems, develop new skills, solve problems, and strives to find the best way to provide IT services for a large and diverse campus that includes administration, academic, and research functions.

Team Overview:
The mission of the ITES Linux team is to provide operational oversight to the enterprise systems supporting the goals of the University. This includes but not limited to RedHat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu Linux operating systems; applications including Readibots (Cloudbridge), Splunk, Zenoss and Ansible servers; data center automation and infrastructure-as-code tools including Ansible, HashiCorp Terraform and Vault; and elements of disaster recovery and business continuity. The team fosters a dynamic and creative environment which focuses on providing the best IT services and customer experience for faculty, staff, and researchers.


Job Description

40% - Leadership of the Enterprise Systems Linux team

  • Provide direct supervision and oversight of the efforts of the Enterprise Systems Linux team
  • Create an environment and culture that encourages innovation and productivity
  • Mentor team members to encourage professional development and improve overall team capability
  • Delegate projects and tasks to team members
  • Evaluate staff performance; guide team members in the development of goals and tracking goal progress
  • Participate in planning and strategy development for the Microsoft systems and Platforms environments
  • Coordinate efforts of the Enterprise Systems Linux team to align with overall KU IT strategy
30% - Provide leadership and expertise for the design, implementation, and operation of technology assets
  • Design, installation, and operational management of servers running RedHat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu Linux
  • Design, Installation, and operational management of Linux enterprise systems and automation platforms
  • Lead the development of solutions for projects requiring IT enterprise services
  • Coordinate proactive and emergency maintenance
  • Perform capacity planning and performance monitoring
  • Design, implement and support automation systems to increase productivity
15% - Technical administration of University cloud computing environments
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and operation of systems utilizing cloud computing environments.
  • Design and implement orchestration and automation systems to streamline operations
  • Capacity planning and performance monitoring
10% - Emergency Support
  • Serve as the first point of contact for Linux-based enterprise systems and the supporting components
  • Manage and provide escalation point for the 24 hours on-call rotation for emergency support
5% - Other Security Responsibilities:
  • This position shares in responsibility for information security by following all applicable security policies and procedures
  • This position is authorized to use elevated privilege accounts in the performance of job duties
  • This position is authorized to issue password resets in accordance with established procedure in the performance of job duties
  • This position is authorized to handle sensitive or confidential data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties
  • This position is authorized to provision and deprovision user accounts and access in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties
  • This position is authorized to manage, provision, and deprovision IT assets in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED and ten years’ relevant professional experience or an Associate’s degree and eight years’ relevant professional experience or a Bachelor’s degree and six years’ relevant professional experience
  • Three years' technical administration and design experience with servers, systems, and/or applications in an enterprise scale IT environment
  • One year experience in writing complex code using one or more datacenter focused scripting languages
  • One year experience using Ansible or similar enterprise automation platform
  • Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials
  • Three years’ experience working in a collaborative team environment of two or more people

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • At least five years’ work experience administrating Linux servers in a large academic or corporate IT environment demonstrating high levels of responsibility and complexity
  • At least one year management and supervision experience of a team of three or more
  • At least three years’ experience supporting Linux servers that leverage Active Directory for user authentication
  • At least one year experience managing systems deployed to Microsoft Azure or similar cloud environment
  • At least one year experience working with VMware or similar virtualization environment
  • Ability to work independently on complex issues/projects.
