Job Summary

This position works within the Infant-Parent Program, a program of the Division of Infant, Child and Adolescent Services.  Under the supervision of the IPP Director, this position exists to provide clinical and administrative oversight for IPP’s Infant-Parent Psychotherapy services (IPPsy), IPP’s primary specialty mental health services, and includes provision of clinical supervision of clinical staff and direct services within the program.  This position will, in partnership with the ICAP Division Administrator, coordinate with ICAP clinic administrative staff to ensure that procedures are in place to track compliance with requirements of our City and County fee-for-service psychotherapy contract, and assist the IPP and ICAP Division Directors in long-term planning of clinical treatment services, including policy planning and implementation.  This position will represent Infant-Parent Program and IPPPsy services with community partners, including SFDPH, SF Human Services Agency, and other child and family-serving systems.  

The IPPPSY Clinical Coordinator will provide clinical and administrative supervision to IPP staff providing IPPPsy direct services, and clinical supervision and training for IPP learners within the program’s Intensive Practice-Based Training Program.  Within their capacity as clinical supervisor, this position shall ensure their supervisees’ compliance with the laws and regulations governing practice; oversee and monitor trainees' accrual of hours in this placement and verify the supervisee’s completed experience hours at the completion of supervision.  This position will be involved in all aspects of supporting high-quality infant-parent psychotherapy services, including allocation of funds in collaboration with the IPP Director and ICAP Division Administrator, management of clinical personnel, review and oversight of service reports, and involvement in program evaluation and reporting. 

This position will also aim to support caregiving relationships through the provision of community-based infant and early childhood mental health psychotherapy services to a diverse community of families and providers throughout San Francisco.  Many of the caregivers supported in our program have past or ongoing experiences of immigration, trauma, substance use, intimate partner violence, racism, and poverty.  More than half of the families served in our program speak English as a second language.  This position will provide infant/child-parent psychotherapy for families referred from key IPP partners, including ZSFG perinatal and pediatric clinics, SF Child Welfare, SF Family Treatment Court and community partner agencies. This position will be supervised by the Interim Director of Infant-Parent Program.


Department Description

The Infant-Parent Program (IPP), a program within the Division of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  The Infant-Parent Program is a multifaceted infant and early childhood mental health program offering diversity-informed early childhood mental health consultation; infant-parent psychotherapy; perinatal mental health services; therapeutic play groups, therapeutic shadowing, and intensive training in the hospital and in community settings.  IPP serves approximately 3000 children ages birth through 5 and their caregivers.  Annually about 75 of these children and their families are seen in intensive therapy, approximately 50 pregnant people are provided integrated behavioral health supports within their perinatal clinics, and the remaining children and families benefit from consultation to their caregivers in early care and education centers, domestic violence and homeless shelters, family resource centers and residential substance abuse treatment centers.


Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field and possession of a clinical license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, and five years of post-master's experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three years of lead/supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in administration, supervision, program development and implementation within a social service setting providing early childhood mental health consultation and/or clinical treatment.
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position, including familiarity with AVATAR and/or Medi-Cal behavioral health systems.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness, effective written and oral communication, diplomacy, organizational and analytic skills.
  • Self-directed, assertive and creative in problem solving, systems planning and client care management.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with any patient and family regardless of race, gender, religious affiliation, cultural beliefs, lifestyle, and disease process or treatment plan.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. 
  • Knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings, as well as experience in providing consultation and training around trauma-informed approaches to systems change; collaborative, relationship-based consultation; and evidence-based psychotherapy for children, youth, and families who have experienced complex trauma.
  • Demonstrated competency working with low-income, culturally diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated competency working with culturally diverse, foreign-born, recent immigrant populations 
  • Aware of institutional polices regarding the provision of services and conduct of research in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Experience working with clients with severe psychosocial stressors and acute and chronic traumas
  • Experience and knowledge about infant and early child growth and development, perinatal mental health, parent-child relationships, child health, and family systems
  • Knowledge of group care for infants and young children
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with a relational approach to infant and early childhood mental health consultation and treatment
  • Knowledge of and experience with a range of theoretical interventions for children and youth exposed to emotional and physical trauma
