Position Summary
Assists the University in achieving its goal of providing an open, diverse and inclusive learning, living and working environment by investigating complaints of discrimination and harassment in the employment setting; ensures compliance with University policies, and federal, state and local equal opportunity employment and education laws; and participates in the development and facilitation of institution-wide training programs and activities related to nondiscrimination and harassment laws and policies.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough and timely investigations of complaints of discrimination, harassment using best practices; develops investigation plan, determines issues to be investigated, who should be interviewed and questions to be asked; identifies data and evidence to gather and analyze.
  • Explains complaint processes and policy standards and requirements. Prepares investigation documents and correspondence and develops findings and recommendations. 
  • Identifies areas for policy improvement and recommends programs, strategies, and other collaborative activities to prevent discrimination and harassment from occurring in University units, departments, and/or divisions.
  • Ensures complaints are logged, processed, and investigated in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Advises faculty, staff and students of their rights under federal law and University policy regarding nondiscrimination and harassment (e.g., Title II, Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, ADA, ADEA, etc.).
  • Works with Human Resources, Gender Equity and Title IX Office and other internal stakeholders to ensure policies and practices protect the right of students, employees, and applicants.
  • Participates in the development and facilitation of institution-wide training and activities related to nondiscrimination and harassment laws and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • J.D. or advanced degree in Human Resources, Psychology, Social Work, or student conduct experience.
  • Knowledge of the complexities surrounding harassment and discrimination in an employment setting.
  • Experience in higher education setting working with and training faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret Title II, Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, ADA and ADEA as well as federal, local and state equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws and regulations. 
  • Ability to conduct highly sensitive investigations and interviews using proactive listening skills and thorough questioning techniques. 
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent and mature judgment, maintain objectivity, and safeguard confidential and sensitive information. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing 
  • Ability to understand the needs of the university and to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community partners. 
  • Effective project management, organizational and analytical skills. 
  • Strong writing, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to prepare reports and presentations independently, and present ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Sense of urgency in approaching responsibilities. 
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written communication skills and interpersonal skills with ability to foster positive interactions with diverse constituencies. 
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to operate personal computer and various software programs.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline and three years of experience in conducting confidential, sensitive investigations of discrimination, harassment, and other employment law related complaints in employment and/or academic settings or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling seven years.

Salary Range
$73,700.00 - $125,900.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
