Description of Work Unit
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION: This position is duty stationed at the CEMML Joint Region Marianas (JRM) Area of Responsibility (AOR) Biosecurity Program office in Asan, Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines.  Joint Region Marianas (JRM) was established in 2009 as the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force on Guam combined headquarters. While the Navy has numerous environmental protection programs in the region, a comprehensive biosecurity program to ensure protection of native plants and animals is a top priority. 
Position Summary
A full-time appointment for a qualified Field Biologist position is available with CEMML and duty-stationed on Guam in compliance with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Mariana Islands Training and Testing Biological Opinion of 2015 and the Navy-funded Project Statement of Work that implement regional biosecurity measures to prevent introduction and promote control and management of invasive species. In fulfillment of these objectives, the Field Biologist will act on a Biosecurity team to conduct field data collection, and control invasive species and provide interdiction on the islands in support of US Navy Joint Region Marianas, located on Guam.
Required Job Qualifications
  • A BS degree in Botany, Biology, Ecology or closely related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience in natural resource management. 
  • Experience working in the Pacific region or other island ecosystems in the biological, natural resources, or agricultural fields.
  • Minimum of (2) years of work experience managing geospatial data with proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Must have experience maintaining pesticide records and familiarity with pesticide safety protocols. 
  • Experience implementing control methods for little fire ants or other alien insect species, including chemical, biological and/or mechanical control techniques.
  • Must be capable of walking several miles in inclement weather (extreme heat, high humidity, heavy rain and winds) carrying up to 35 pounds.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle driving background check by employment start date.
  • Must be willing to submit for NACI background check to obtain a DoD Common Access Card.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Ability to deploy from Guam to locations in Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, sometimes on short notice. 

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • More than two (2) years of professional work experience in natural resource management.
  • Taxonomic knowledge of arthropods and the ability to identify arthropod pest species.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by prior experience documenting field activities and writing technical reports and SOPs. 
  • Hold a Guam CORE pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Experience working on a military installation, interacting with headquarters-level staff, and familiarity with DOD/Navy environmental and safety regulations.

Conduct baseline survey monitoring of invasive species within the Joint Region Marianas, documenting population vigor and habitat conditions, focused on reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, arthropods, gastropods and weeds. Research, recommend and establish methods for invasive species eradication and measures to reduce the probability of species becoming established. Use experience and knowledge to establish procedures and strategy for protecting existing habitat and eliminating transfer or threat of invasive species to the Pacific region.

Document findings and prepare technical reports as required. Manage pesticide safety protocols and regulatory documents. Communicate, coordinate and schedule project tasks. Develop specific details for action items determined to be warranted and feasible. Develop long-term monitoring protocols and Standard Operating Procedures to minimize spread of invasive species in support of a Regional Biosecurity Plan.

Gather GIS data of survey tracks and polygons of surveyed areas. 
Use GPS and GNSS devices (Trimble, Arrow, Garmin) to collect data and transfer to appropriate programs. Use ArcGIS Pro to create maps that detail sampling design and results of each sampling site.
