Position Focus:

Reporting to the Museum’s Associate Director of Exhibitions, the Interpretation Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating activities relating to storytelling and interpretation by and for diverse audiences, centered on the Peabody’s public exhibitions. Supporting meaningful and innovative collaborations with individuals and organizations at Yale, in New Haven, and around the world is the focus of this position. The Interpretation Manager will also play a key role working with staff and students to improve the standard of the Peabody’s interpretation; acting as a content resource for staff and students working in the galleries; managing day-to-day collaborations with colleagues around the Peabody; evaluating exhibition content; and developing onboarding and ongoing training for staff, students, and volunteers.

Leads day-to-day communication and liaises with Yale and external collaborators, including students, working on exhibition projects such as displays, labels, programs, and other modes of interpretation. Engages in outreach to build and sustain community relationships.

Facilitates interpretative collaborations within the Peabody, including with Museum educators, curators, collections staff, and communications staff. Supports development of gallery carts, tours, and other visitor-centered educational experiences by providing background information, talking points, training materials, and feedback.

Works with curatorial teams, collections, educators, and communications staff to develop content for the museum’s digital platforms.

Carries out evaluation of exhibitions and interpretation, including supervision of participants, collation and/or creation of evaluation content, liaison with external evaluators, and data collection and analysis.

Writes labels and other interpretive content. Edits for consistency across all interpretive materials.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. In support of the overall mission, plans, directs and oversees programmatic activities. 2. Develops, implements, and maintains operational policies and procedures. 3. Manages program communications; identifies outreach potential, and promotes philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. 4. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 5. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. 6. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. Develops metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. 7. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. 8. Develops and manages the program's operating budget. 9. Manages the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resources including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated ability to make scholarly information accessible to various audiences, including the general public and families.

High degree of organizational skill and ability to handle multiple projects in various stages of development. Creative problem-solving.

Ability to process, analyze, and report on data obtained from a variety of sources.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Proven experience in museum education, interpretation, or exhibition work. Demonstrated experience in natural history and/or anthropology in a museum context. Proven experience with community-focused collaborations. Sensitivity to working with people from a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds. Familiarity with museum education theory.
