Job Summary

The International Student Advisor specializing in Practical Training (employment benefits) in the capacity of a Designated School Official (DSO) is a primary resource to international students for issues related to legal requirements concerning Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, STEM OPT extensions, data corrections, I-983 and I-765 review, and Cap Gap procedures. In this role, you will manage processes, data collection, and informational components as required by SEVIS, keep abreast of federal regulations, policies and procedures governing all aspects of OPT and CPT and work together with Colleges and the Graduate School as needed.

 

This is a hybrid position requiring the successful candidate to be physically located at the Purdue University in Indianapolis location 1-2 days per week with occasional trips to the West Lafayette campus.


What You'll Be Doing:
  • Serve as a primary resource to international students for issues related to legal requirements concerning Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, STEM OPT extensions, H-1B change of status, DHS data and system corrections, and Cap Gap procedures
  • Manage and refine the processes, data collection, and informational components as required by SEVIS
  • Keep abreast of federal regulations governing all aspects of OPT and CPT
  • Serve as part of ISS team in ensuring university compliance with federal regulations
  • Represent the ISS at pertinent events planned in tandem with Purdue Alumni Association for international student alumni
  • Work with the Center for Career Opportunities for the development of employment and career counseling seminars and workshops geared toward the needs of international students
  • Assist with orientation and programming at the Purdue University in Indianapolis location
  • Provide outreach to alumni addressing unique issues of concern to this constituency including dissemination of information on SEVIS responsibilities mandated of students on OPT and support to students in complying with federal regulations as demanded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Additional duties as assigned

What We're Looking For:
  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1 year of formal work experience in F-1 student advising, SEVIS, and compliance 
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate's degree + 3 years of experience; HS/GED + 5 years of experience)
  • Knowledge of SEVIS RTI procedures
  • Proven ability to work effectively with students, scholars, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who represent a broad range of cultural backgrounds and perspectives
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well under pressure and appropriately handle confidential material
  • Strong computing skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working in a variety of software and data entry and processing systems

Nice to Have:
  • Master's degree
  • Expertise in international student advising, employment, and compliance strongly
  • Fluency in other language and experience living abroad highly desirable
