Position Overview

The International Education Advisor (IEA) is a key member of the ISS staff, serving as a Designated School Official for the F-1 student program and as an Alternate Responsible Officer for the J-1 exchange visitor program. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Advising and Compliance and is responsible for providing counseling and advising support to prospective and admitted international students, with particular regard to immigration-related matters. In addition to advising responsibilities, the International Education Advisor develops and implements or assists in the development and implementation of a variety of educational, social and immigration programs and services coordinated through the ISS office or in collaboration with campus and community partners.


Job Description

The percentages listed below might change during critical times and the responsibilities of the IEA include but are not limited to:

35%  

  • Counseling, advising and consulting with prospective and admitted international students on matters related to F-1, J-1 and occasionally other non-immigrant status regulations. Interpret non-immigrant status regulations, policies and practices for students, faculty and staff of the university community.

  • Processing F-1 and J-1 immigration forms and documents including reporting applicable data to SEVIS and appropriate government agencies. Interacting with government agencies including Department of State and Department of Homeland Security.

20%
  • Coordinating ISS document check-in processes for both short-term and long-term international students. Assisting with the design, implementation and management of educational, social and immigration programs (including international student orientation).  

10%  

  • Assisting the ISS team in daily administrative duties and other designated responsibilities, which may include J-1 scholar advising, virtual. Serving on departmental and university-wide committees. Supporting other projects and populations that KUISS serves (i.e., J-1 scholar advising, H-1B advising) and other statuses as appropriate and as needed.

Position Requirements

  • This position begins on-site but may move to a hybrid model after incumbent successfully completes the 6-month probationary period.  After successfully completing probation, incumbent may work one (1) day a week remotely based on a set departmental schedule.  

  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus one year of work experience in a college or university setting OR a Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Excellent oral communication skills as evidenced by experience listed in the application materials and interview (if selected).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have Legal Permanent Resident status so as to comply with the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security's requirements in order to access and sign immigration documents.
  • Experience working with database management systems in university settings (i.e., but not limited to ImageNow, Sunapsis, SLATE, Blackboard, PeopleSoft, Canvas).
  • Demonstrated experience working with international students and/or living, studying and working abroad.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree emphasis in International Education, Educational Administration, counseling, English as a Second Language, foreign languages and cultures or other related fields.
  • Experience in student counseling and advisement.
  • Knowledge of the needs and concerns of students from abroad.
  • Experience in planning, organizing and implementing workshops, seminars and/or programs.
  •  At least three years of educational, social, and/or immigration programming or related experience in general college or university-level student personnel service.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with F-1 and/or J-1 regulations as applied in the college or university setting.
  • Experience working with SEVIS processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience working in a web environment.
