Position Overview

The International Advisor is a key member of the International Support Services (ISS) staff, serving as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the F-1 student program and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J-1 exchange visitor program. This position reports directly to the Senior International Advisor and is responsible for providing counseling and advising support to international students and scholars. This person will be a DSO with the Department of Homeland Security and an ARO with the Department of State. The U.S. government requires DSOs and AROs to have U.S. permanent residence or U.S. citizenship.

Job Description

90% Immigration Advising and Compliance

  • Counsels, advises and consults with international students and scholars on matters related to F-1, J-1 and occasionally other non-immigrant status regulations.
  • Interprets non-immigrant status regulations, policies and practices for students, scholars, faculty, and staff of the university community. 
  • Processes data and creates immigration documents for F-1 and J-1 nonimmigrants in the Student and Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS), a government database.
  • Analyzes data and reports accurate and timely information to SEVIS to maintain Federal compliance requirements.
  • Assists with coordinating and performing ISS Check Ins for new students and scholars.
  • Provides workshops and presentations on F-1 and J-1 regulations for students, scholars, and university departments.
  • Interacts with appropriate government agencies including Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, Social Security Administration and Kansas Department of Revenue (for Kansas Driver’s Licenses).

10% Miscellaneous
  • Supports other projects and populations that KU ISS serves.
  • Assists the ISS team in daily administrative duties and other designated responsibilities. Serving on departmental and university-wide committees.

Position Requirements

  • This position begins on-site but may move to a hybrid model after incumbent successfully completes the 6-month probationary period.  After successfully completing probation, incumbent may earn one (1) remote work day a week based on a set departmental schedule. 
  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident to comply with Federal regulation requirements to be a DSO and ARO (to issue and sign immigration documents).

  • Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree OR Bachelor’s degree plus one (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Attention to detail as evidenced by application materials.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite to include Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, and/or Excel as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Experience working with database management systems as demonstrated by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree emphasis in International Education, Educational Administration, counseling, English as a Second Language, foreign languages and cultures or other related fields.
  • Experience working with international students and/or living, studying or working abroad.
  • Experience working with F-1 and/or J-1 regulations as applied in the college or university setting.
  • Experience advising or counseling students or scholars.
  • Experience working with database management systems in university settings (especially PeopleSoft, sunapsis, SEVIS, SLATE and/or Canvas).
  • Experience interacting with non-native speakers of English.
  • Experience in planning, organizing and implementing workshops, seminars and/or programs.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Experience with social media in a professional setting.
