Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Director of the Center for Academic Advising (DAA) is responsible for the strategic vision of the Center, which serves as the first academic home for all first-time freshmen, select transfer students, Isaac Bear Early College High School students enrolled at UNCW, and non-degree seeking undergraduates. Additionally, undeclared student athletes and honors students begin their academic careers with the Center for Academic Advising while be supported through Student Athlete Support Services and the Honors College. The DAA works closely with the Assistant Provost for SEER to ensure new students successfully matriculate to UNCW, transition to college level learning, and successfully declare a major into the student’s Academic College of choice. This work involves a focus on enrollment, orientation, retention, persistence, and curricular needs of all undeclared, exploratory, and deciding students. The DAA directs the planning, delivery, and assessment of the first year and transfer seminar curriculums for all new students. The DAA is expected to maintain strong working relationships with Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, the Honors College, the Directors of Academic Advising in the academic colleges, and the SEER Directors to address issues relevant to retention, persistence, and graduation. In addition to this work, the DAA leads intervention efforts geared toward increasing retention of first-time, full-time, freshmen, and other new undergraduate students.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Student Development)
  • 6 years of increasing responsibility within higher education, including 5 years of academic advising experience
  • Demonstrated capabilities in customer service, project management, and strategic prioritization
  • Experience with leading Academic Advising efforts
  • Experience leading retention efforts for the First-Time Full-Time cohort
  • Experience in managing and coordinating stop-out prevention initiatives
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills to meet the needs of all stakeholders.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Ed. D. or similar advanced credential connected to leadership and higher education.
  • At least three years leadership/supervisory experience in an academic advising environment.
  • Experienced with assessment of programs and/or services.
  • Possess a proven track record for effective advising, coaching, and communication skills within a diverse student population in both face-to-face and distance/online environments.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
  • Ability to utilize and learn various advising and software applications, learning platforms, and technology-based delivery systems. Experience working with applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, as well as enterprise platforms (Banner, Degree Works, Starfish, Web Now, etc.)
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, customer service, staff building, and organizational skills within a complex and diverse organization. Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders across the University.
  • Demonstrated evidence of effective judgment, problem solving skills, and professional integrity.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices and theoretical foundations in the fields of adult learning, student development, advising, and student services.
  • Ability to set priorities and balance multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to analyze data, solve problems, make decisions, and prioritize.
  • Familiarity with successful retention practices within a R2 or R1 higher education institutional setting is preferred.
  • Experience with college-level teaching and/or with college-level curriculum development.
  • Experience teaching or managing first-year seminar programs.
  • The ability to develop and implement a comprehensive assessment and continuous improvement plan within the center.
  • A strong commitment to equity and inclusion with demonstrated evidence of ways professional knowledge, skills, and experience contribute to building and sustaining equitable, diverse, and inclusive communities.
  • Ability to occasionally work irregular work hours, including occasional evening and weekend hours to meet diverse student needs and attend recruitment events.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Student Engagement, Enrollment, and Retention (SEER) is a functional area of the Division of Academic Affairs. SEER supports students throughout their academic career, from recruitment to graduation, to advance student success at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). SEER includes multiple enrollment and student service areas including Admissions, Military Affairs, Registrar, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Athlete Support Services, Student Success Data and Research, Transfer Partnerships, Retention and Student Success, and the Center for Academic Advising
The Center for Academic Advising supports all incoming freshman, undeclared transfer students, Isaac Bear Early College High School students enrolled at UNCW, and non-degree seeking undergraduate students until they become eligible to declare a major. Additionally, undeclared student athletes and Honors students begin their academic careers with the Center for Academic Advising while being supported through Student Athlete Support Services and the Honors College. The Center for Academic Advising is responsible for the development and implementation of co-curricular programs that support a student’s successful transition to college and enhances retention. Students are advised by a team of professional advisors and the unit supports the First Year Seminar curriculum. The Center for Academic Advising is actively engaged in helping students take responsibility for their academic success by encouraging exploration of academic disciplines, utilizing the campus resources available to support their development, developing an understanding of academic requirements and standards and promoting career exploration. The Center for Academic Advising staff works collaboratively and proactively with staff and faculty throughout the university to enhance the effectiveness of student intervention strategies that increase student learning and success.
