Position Overview

This position is open to tenured faculty members in the University of Kansas, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences only.

The director provides leadership and oversight for all teaching, research, service, administrative, and outreach activities within the program. In addition, the director maintains their own teaching/research/service responsibilities as a faculty member.

This position reports to, and serves at the pleasure of, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.


Job Description

Director Responsibilities (50%):

  • Develops excellence in graduates as scientist-practitioners proficient in the two roles of the discipline and profession through the enhanced involvement of students with quality faculty in research, clinical applications, and professional functioning.
  • Demonstrates a recognized model program for training clinical child psychologists in evidence-based practice as an exemplar for the discipline.
  • Provides oversight and leadership for all program activities, including outreach and updating of program training manual.
  • Reviews and modifies the long-range planning for the program as it concerns the program's curriculum, faculty support, outreach, and fund raising.
  • Oversees all internal budgetary, administrative, and personnel matters and reports to necessary administrative units.
  • Seeks enhancement of all program resources by actively seeking external funding and seeks to identify and secure additional program and student funding.
  • Administers the graduate academic program.
  • Advises students in their professional development as well as nominates students to leadership positions in professional organizations, post-graduate activities, and employment.
  • Facilitates and provides supports for students applying for internship, including writing letters of support for internship applications.
  • Maintains the highly selective admission criteria and high retention rate (including time to degrees) of graduate students in the program.
  • Supervises and reviews professional, academic, and University support staff. Manage promotion and tenure review process through two departments for CCPP faculty.
  • Maintains students' files and monitors evaluations and reviews.
  • Maintains program's accreditation through annual reports to APA, surveys of current students and graduates, self-study reviews, and accreditation report.
  • Oversees the applications for and administration of fellowships, grants, and prizes awarded to students by the program and outside the program.
  • Chairs faculty search committees in CCPP; chairs graduate student admissions committee; responds to potential student applicants to the program and provides program information to applicants via multiple means (e.g., website, email, Peterson guide, APA Guide to Graduate Studies).
  • Maintains an effective working relationship with the Departments of ABS and Psychology.
  • Maintains an active role in professional organizations and visible in representing the program and advocates locally and nationally for program, faculty, and students, negotiating and lobbying on behalf of the program.
  • Develops and enhances research and educational relationships between the program and other units within the University, as well as with agencies outside the University, governmental, public, or private.
  • Executes University policy in the program effectively.
  • Represents the program in reporting to the College and other University entities.
  • Maintains internal communication of program policies and activities for faculty and students.
  • Creates a supportive environment for faculty and student success.
  • Faculty Responsibilities (50%):

    20% Teaching

  • Teach 2 courses per academic year in field of specialty.
  • Mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students in research.
  • Supervise graduate teaching assistants, as assigned.
  • Serve on graduate student committees that supervise and evaluate progress toward degree completion.
  • 20% Research

  • Engage in scholarly research, including publishing appropriate peer-reviewed works, and presenting research at professional conferences on a regular basis.
  • 10% Service

    Provide general service to the department, the College, the University, and to the academic profession.


    Required Qualifications

  • Tenured appointment with the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Psychology or  Applied Behavioral Science.  
  • Ability and desire to serve as a leader of an academic program, developing and enhancing, research, educational, and service relationships among faculty, and between the unit and its affiliated units and alumni.  
  • Experience in teaching, and a commitment to teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  
  • Strong record of scholarly achievement with clear evidence of continuing research activity.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary studies in teaching, research, and service.  
  •  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to manage interpersonal relations.  
  •  Commitment to enhancing and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Tenured appointment with the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Psychology or Applied Behavioral Science. 
  • Experience with KU and KUCR administrative procedures.  
  • Experience in seeking outside funding and managing multiple projects.  
  • Professional style that is approachable and understanding of the differences among students.

    Director compensation consists of an administrative supplement added to the academic-year (9-month) salary and additional summer salary compensation, as determined by the Dean of the College. The supplement and summer salary are removed when the director
