Position Overview

The School of Music is seeking a tenured full or associate professor to serve as an Associate Dean to focus on Performance Activities beginning  March 4, 2024. This role will serve in a 20% administrative capacity during the academic year. This administrative appointment works closely with, and serves at the pleasure of, the Dean. This position receives a $5,000 administrative supplement and is for an initial 1-year appointment. The position may be renewed based upon needs of the School of Music after leadership restructuring, comprehensive review of performance, and the best interest of the School and University.


Job Description

40% Teaching – Specific course assignments and locations are assigned at the discretion of the coordinator of your area, in consultation with you. You are expected to have established, posted office hours of at least two hours per week and be available to meet with students by appointment.

20% Research – It is the expectation of your position that you engage in a program of creativity activity/research and share your work with colleagues and/or the public at large, through publication or other activities as detailed in your department or program’s faculty evaluation plan and promotion and tenure policy.

20% Administration

  • Coordinate annual performance calendars of large ensembles, opera, etc.
  • Assists in the coordination of recruitment activities for all performance areas.
  • Coordinate KU School of Music performances and non-MEMT presentations at KMEA convention and other similar music conferences/conventions.
  • Work with area coordinators of performance areas on non-academic, performance-related issues.
  • Oversee assignments, loads, and enrollments for the faculty accompanist and applied performance faculty.
  • Liaison for the School of Music with the Lied Center of Kansas.
  • Assist in the ongoing strategic development of this position.
  • Work closely with the dean in pursuing the Strategic Plan and best interest of all programs in the School of Music.
  • Serve as the dean's representative to the University when called upon.
  • Work cooperatively and strategically with the other associate deans on matters for which they are responsible and for the overall benefit of the School of Music.
  • Other duties as assigned.
20% Service

– It is an expectation of your position that you fulfill your share of service duties needed to facilitate the efficient operation of your department or program, and the University, as well as serve in regional, national, and/or international activities of your discipline.  Activities that foster effective relationships with alumni and other constituencies may also constitute service.


Required Qualifications

  • Full-time, tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor within the School of Music.
  • Show experience of research/creative accomplishments nationally or internationally.
  • Experience working on projects or creative activities requiring a high attention of detail and/or reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated through application materials, previous work history, interview, student evaluations, and/or references.
  • Evidence of collaboration and/or experience in creating inclusive culture and dialog with diverse groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with students, faculty, administrators, and outside constituents as demonstrated through work history and interview.
