Position Details


General Statement
The Office of Audit Services provides audit and advisory services that are independent, objective and risk based. Audit Services has a dual reporting relationship to the Office of the President and the Montana University System Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education.
The Internal Auditor performs financial, compliance, and operational audits in accordance with professional internal auditing standards. Audits are conducted in conjunction with other auditors as a team or independently under the direction of a supervisor. This position interacts with numerous campus units including finance, information technology, student services, research, and athletics
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Gathers and analyzes financial data, state and federal regulations, and university policies to plan and conduct audits of financial, operational and compliance areas of the university.
  • Meets with university personnel to understand and assess departmental and campus-wide systems and processes.
  • Examines university records, transactions, and processes and documents audit work in an organized manner.
  • Communicates observations, recommendations, and other audit results to university management through written reports and orally in meetings.
  • Assists with investigative or advisory services as assigned.
  • Performs administrative and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, information systems, economics, or other similar business or technology area, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated work experience or internship in accounting, auditing, information systems, bookkeeping, finance, business office, or a similar business environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Holds a professional certification (CIA, CPA, CFE, CISA) or has met educational qualifications and is willing to obtain certification.
  • The Successful Candidate Will
    • Be comfortable conducting audit interviews with university personnel.
    • Be able to manage multiple projects within designated timelines.
    • Be able to perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy and detail.
    • Be proficient using computer word processing and spreadsheet applications such as Word and Excel.
    • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Be able to maintain confidentiality of university, employee, and student information.
    • Be able to adhere to a professional code of ethics.
    • Be able to analyze records, systems, and processes.
    • Be able to develop logical conclusions from information reviewed.
    • Be able to clearly document the nature, timing, extent, and results of audit procedures.
    • Be able to work successfully both independently and in teams.
    • Represent the office and MSU to others in a professional and courteous manner.
    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    Must reside in Montana to be eligible for hire.
    This position is located at MSU-Bozeman, however, some travel (including overnight) to other campuses and related entities, meetings, conferences, or other activities is required.
    Must possess a valid driver’s license (or be able to attain one within the first six months), an acceptable driving record and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. Please do not send a copy of the driver’s license at this time. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, a valid Montana driver’s license must be obtained prior to travel.)
