Job Description:

The goal of the student internship in the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) is to expose students in the fields of animal science, pre-veterinary sciences and other related majors to the use of animals in a research setting.

This internship will introduce students to the regulatory requirements associated with the use of animals in biomedical research. Students will be provided with the opportunity to see and participate in a variety of different jobs that are critical to the laboratory animal science field and it will provide them with a broad overview of the career opportunities available in the field. Students are encouraged to prepare a presentation on a topic of their choosing that is relevant to lab animal science/lab animal medicine. This aspect will further serve to develop their presentation skills and enable them to research an area of interest in the field. Depending on their past experience and future plans, students may report to the Senior Veterinary Technician as well as various CARE supervisors.

This intern position in CARE will include assisting the animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, the facility manager, veterinarians and other animal care administrative staff with various daily activities in the animal facilities.

The internship is an excellent opportunity for animal science, pre-veterinary undergraduate students, veterinary technician students or 1st/2nd year veterinary students who have an interest in or desire to gain additional experience in laboratory animal medicine and/or biomedical research.

The term of this position is May - August 2024.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Assisting the animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, the facility manager, veterinarians and other CARE administrative staff with various daily activities in the animal facilities.

  • Rotate through various sections of the animal facility including cage wash, animal husbandry, veterinary support services and surgical operations.

  • Participate in the daily activities of the department and will be required to present a seminar at the end of the externship on a topic of their choice, approved by a staff veterinarian.

  • May also have the opportunity to attend Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) meetings and participate in regulatory inspections.

Activities may include:

  • Providing daily husbandry care for a variety of species

  • Observing animals as part of daily health checks

  • Performing or assisting with environmental enrichment program for a variety of species

  • Performing or assisting with medical treatments and/or preventive health care under the direction of veterinary technicians or veterinarians

  • Assisting veterinary technicians with surgical/veterinary equipment and procedure room maintenance

  • Assisting veterinary technicians with routine and/or diagnostic sample collection and processing

  • Assisting with or performing cage wash operations

  • Assisting veterinary technicians with surgical and imaging procedures 

  • Maintaining records in compliance with all applicable federal regulations

  • Attending Institutional Animal Care and Use meetings to learn about the review of animal use protocols

  • Assisting the Facility Supervisor or veterinary technicians with receipt of incoming animal orders or supplies.

  • May assist animal care technicians in monthly room breakdown and set up.​

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Animal science, pre-veterinary undergraduate students, veterinary technician students or 1st/2nd year veterinary students who have an interest in or desire to gain additional experience in laboratory animal medicine and/or biomedical research.

Additional Information:

  • Requires attendance/completion of all mandated safety training and adherence to the Animal Care and Use Occupational health and Safety Program which may require additional testing and vaccination (e.g., measles, Q-fever, rabies and tetanus) in order to obtain access to the facility.

  • Involves working with a wide variety of animals and learning about the housing and care needs of each species.

  • There is possibility of physical strain, animal bites and/or scratches, exposure to biological, chemical and radiation hazards and animal allergens.

  • May include some weekend and holiday work.

  • Requires the use of personal protective equipment, e.g., masks, shoe covers, eye protection, hair bonnets, and disposable coveralls as needed.

  • Requires being able to position self to maintain equipment in labs and housing rooms.

  • May require TB testing.

  • We do not provide housing in Providence area.
