Position Focus:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Specialty Services, the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging develops, coordinates, implements and monitors departmental operational workflow to optimize the delivery of quality patient care in Diagnostic Imaging. Leads and manages the operational activities for all modalities as well as the administration of all non-physician aspects of imaging services. Ensures safe imaging practice, regulatory compliance and exceptional care delivery.

Oversees and ensures that policies, procedures and practices meet the standards of accreditation bodies, including Joint Commission. Identifies opportunities and implements the improvement of existing processes. Addresses and resolves broad management/administrative issues such as planning for future programs and services, fiscal monitoring and control, patient scheduling, patient and staff safety, workflows, operational monitoring, regulatory compliance and the overall timeliness and quality of services provided to patients.

Works effectively in a cross-functional team environment, interacting positively and productively with staff, physicians, other department managers and directors, and other organizational employees. Establishes trust and credibility at all levels of the organization, effects collaborative alliances, and promotes teamwork. Effectively manages resources and budgets.

May have additional responsibilities including manager of blood draw, oversight of CLIA activities, participation in safety huddles and organization committees. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Manage the activities of professional and support staff and departmental tasks including, professional and support staff schedules, patient appointment scheduling systems and ensuring minimum staffing levels.
  • Oversight of priority requests and directs triage activities.
  • Development and maintenance of strong relationships with Physician Chiefs, clinician teams, as well as a key member of the Clinical Operations management team.
  • Promote professional growth for self and staff.
  • May hire, train, evaluate, and supervise support staff.
  • Develop and implement orientation and training of new staff technologists.
  • Coordinate the training necessary to keep technical staff current with the latest technological advances.
  • May maintain training records and deliver annual performance reviews.
  • Daily coordination and collaboration with YNHH DI to ensure completion of all imaging studies performed at either location for YH members.
  • Participate in the resolution of patient service issues.
  • Oversee performance of quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Ensure documentation is completed and maintained.
  • Ensures compliance and successful inspection, certification and/or licensing including for ACR, DEEP/DPH, etc.
  • Primary contact with American College of Radiology, West Physics, DEEP for oversight and adherence to certifications, regulatory inspections and licensures.
  • Primary contact for EHS regarding quarterly dosimetry, tracking of signed exposure records.
  • Partners with University Environmental Health and Safety. Responsible for contract review /negotiation with vendors.
  • Ensures timely service of equipment for all modalities, instruments, power injectors for CT, MR, ionizing equipment.
  • Primary contact/resource to Athletics for non-YH imaging site at Yale Bowl, including oversight of state required annual safety testing.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Radiologist, develops, maintains and interprets departmental policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and updates annually. Interprets and implements University and organizational policies and regulations for professional and support staff.
  • Works in collaboration with other managers on inter-departmental project management and work processes.
  • Works with the Chief to develop and monitor an annual budget.
  • Responsible for maintenance of supplies and equipment.

Essential Duties

1. Reviews and determines staffing needs, job posting requirements, salary guidelines, and labor agreement interpretations for exempt and non-exempt staff in one or more functional department of the University. 2. Manages the administrative support needs for exempt and nonexempt staff and provides recommendations, improvements, solutions and assistance as needed. 3. Manages and monitors technology needs, conducts inventory, and system requirements for the assigned departments. 4. Develops and prepares budgets, financial forecasts, and financial analyses and the actual vs. budgeted performance reports for the departments. 5. Manages the use of facilities in one or more departments including office space, work stations, equipment, and office supplies. 6. Manages administrative support for activities of one or more departments to ensure timely completion of projects. 7. Manages and coordinates training sessions for assigned departments when new policies or practices are adopted. 8. Ensures compliance with University and federal regulations as they apply to the assigned departments. 9. Identifies, plans, and develops administrative policies for the assigned departments. 10. Assists in reviewing and implements University and departmental policies as they pertain to the administrative functions of the assigned department. 11. Assesses and makes recommendations regarding staff development and staffing levels. 12. Monitors, develops, plans, and executes systematic research on user requirements through such mechanisms as surveys, interviews, focus groups and competitive analysis. 13. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated supervisory experience in healthcare operations.  Broad knowledge of healthcare administration principles and practices within a managed care environment and/or an academic medical center. 


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven leadership, planning, critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills.  Ability to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction including employees, patients, visitors, faculty, referring physicians and external stakeholders.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to implement change in a positive, sensitive and forward-thinking manner. Strong communication/interpersonal skills both in written and verbal presentation with a communication style that is open and that fosters trust, credibility and understanding.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proficient working knowledge of computer software, EMR, Microsoft Office, as well as PACS. Self-starter with excellent prioritization and organizational skills.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated ability to manage complex staffing schedules and adjust as needed.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master’s Degree


Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, or Certified Radiology Administrator. Proficiency in Epic/Radiant.
