Position Summary Information


Job Description Summary
The Insurance Manager supports the Chapman University Office of Risk Management. The position provides management of the portfolio of insurance policies purchased by the University, including the internal collection of data from individuals and departments throughout the University in connection with the completion of applications for the annual renewal of policies.  Ensures the validation of data, and coordination with the University insurance broker on all submissions.  Lines of coverage include but are not limited to commercial property, general and professional liability, commercial auto, workers’ compensation, international, cyber liability, environmental impairment liability, and miscellaneous other lines of coverage.
 
The Insurance Manager processes requests for Certificates of Insurance, and reviews Certificates of Insurance for outside suppliers to determine the degree to which they meet University requirements.  Reviews the terms for contracts to assure consistency and compliance with untemplated contracts. 
 
Other duties as Assigned.
 
This position is non-exempt and is temporary, working up to 5 hours per week and will work remotely as needed. The anticipated end date for this work is June 30, 2024. 
Responsibilities
  • Verify accuracy of all terms and conditions of renewal policies. Assist the Vice President-Enterprise Risk and Safety with data necessary to the annual analysis and report of transferable risk
  • Manages all data collection necessary to the successful purchase of new and renewal property and liability insurance policies and programs, including gathering data, and completion of necessary applications for coverage.  Provide support for miscellaneous and ancillary policies, such as Intercollegiate Sports, Student Health Insurance, Trip Cancellation Insurance, etc. May maintain contact with broker on additional underwriting data needs and solicit necessary data from the University community.
  • Maintain oversight of all incidents and claims that affect University property and liability insurance policies, including Workers’ Compensation.  Respond to incident reports and maintain internal system of documentation. Make recommendations as appropriate to reduce/eliminate future losses. Collaborate with the Vice President on insurance Broker Claims Advocate to reduce loss reserves as appropriate, including annual review in connection with Workers’ Compensation experience modification calculation process.
  • Review Certificates of Insurance submitted in connection with contract requirements to determine consistency with University minimum standards.  Make recommendations to the Director of Risk Management when higher limits or additional coverages may be indicated for higher risk activities or events.  Verify the financial condition of insurers for vendors and third party events, and assure that all policy deductibles and retentions are consistent with the vendor’s ability to pay. 
  • Review of contracts for services proposed to be entered into by the University with various outside entities to make recommendations on appropriate contract language that is consistent with the risk tolerance and policies of insurance maintained by the University.  
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency, by education and/or related professional work experience, of commercial lines insurance coverages, policy forms, underwriting processes, and claims submission/management processes.   
  • Ability to understand basic contract language as relates to insurance requirements and ability to evaluate Certificates of Insurance and policy documents/forms to assess coverages and exclusions.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.  
  • 6+ years of progressively responsible experience, that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities assigned. 
  • Ability to demonstrate tack and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Strong planning and organizational skills to prioritize multiple projects under pressure and shifting demands and to meet critical deadlines
  • Ability to handle and resolve political and practical concerns relating to the management of risk.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with experience in gathering and collecting data, reasoning logically, drawing valid conclusions, and making effective recommendations to management
  • Strong written communication skills to prepare clear, concise and grammatically correct business correspondence and documents
  • Demonstrated communication  and interpersonal skills to interact with groups of diverse individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the University
  • Proven ability to exercise initiative and work independently, as well as within a team setting
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures
