Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This position works with students, parents, staff, and faculty about UMD’s student health insurance program (SHIP), which includes plan benefit design, enrollment of insured populations, insurance waiver process, and business-related concerns. It is responsible for outreach about the (SHIP).

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree. Relevant experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-by-year basis.

Experience:
  • Two years of experience working as an administrative staff member.
Preferences:

  • 2 years of customer service.
  • PC proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Sound problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with negotiation skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Duty/Responsibility (1): | Responsible for maintaining all insurance files and updating them when necessary. Point of contact and liaison between University stakeholders, carriers, and Third-Party Administrators to answer benefit and policy questions. Collaborate and maintain a good working relationship with internal and external stakeholders. Prepare and present materials related to SHIP during orientation and throughout the academic year to student groups and other university stakeholders. Conduct meetings via Zoom with stakeholders to discuss and resolve concerns and maintain regular office hours on campus. Responsible for quarterly insurance audits and presenting the results and recommendations to management. Responsible for negotiating insurance coverage limits and premiums with each provider.

Essential Duty/Responsibility (2): | Responsible for maintaining an active database of all insurance information regularly reviewed by management. Create a semi-annual insurance audit that includes suggestions on how the company could save money. Look for information from other insurance carriers to compare the rates and coverage the company is currently using. Create and maintain SHIP documentation up to date. -Monitor and respond to the SHIP email account on time to all questions and answer all incoming calls. Handle requests within the level of authority in a courteous and timely manner, and answer urgent or complex inquiries about SHIP. Complete all incoming service tasks accurately and promptly.

Essential Duty/Responsibility (3): | Responsible for creating a monthly inventory of all insurance coverage, submitting it to management, and coordinating insurance coverage for special projects. Developed policies for negotiating with insurance companies for a variety of coverage needs. Actively seek to provide high-quality customer service while providing clients responsive intake services. Demonstrate a welcoming, patient, compassionate attitude toward clients in person and on the phone. Ensure communications maintain positive relationships and interact effectively and professionally with customers. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Essential Duty/Responsibility (4): | Perform special projects as required, including bursar bill student’s account, processing IWIF/inter-department transfer, submitting SHIP claims, or any additional duties.

Essential Duty/Responsibility (5): | Comply with HIPAA, FERPA, Diversity Principles, Corporate Integrity, Compliance program policies, and other applicable corporate and departmental policies. Maintain complete confidentiality of company business. Maintain communication with management regarding development within areas of assigned responsibilities and perform special projects as required or requested.

Physical Demands
Must be able to work long work hours at a computer terminal. Normal physical activity of a busy office setting. Potential exposure to communicable diseases inherent in working in a health care environment. This is an essential position on which demands may be made outside of normal working hours.
