About the Department
The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.
Essential Job Duties
The position primarily oversees the BAE Research Shop that serves students, faculty, and staff in the department and clients outside the department in the fabrication of equipment and supply of material to meet the needs of student projects, research projects, and ad hoc needs of the department and University. This position will supervise the shop’s professional and temporary staff (currently two full-time and two temporary hourly workers). The position will interact with a diverse client base that includes faculty from multiple departments, university field labs, facilities operations, and research shop personnel to process and schedule work orders and interpret design and construction plans. The position will maintain records of shop productivity and invoice clients for services rendered. It will also manage workloads and revenues to ensure positive cash flow to maintain the research shop as a stable cost center. As well as ensure that the shop is properly equipped with tools, materials, and equipment in good working order to ensure high-quality work and shop personnel safety.
The position also serves as the department’s Facilities Operations building, security, and safety liaison, with general oversight of all other laboratories within Weaver Labs. In this capacity, it coordinates disposal of hazardous waste and surplus property for the department, manages the departmental research motor pool (including department-owned and NC DOA fleet vehicles), is the primary CAMS asset coordinator for the department, and serves on various departments, college and University committees as assigned by the department head.

Other Responsibilities
This position will need to travel off-site on occasion alone, and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of shop mechanics, and machine shop instruments, including computer numerical control I(CNC) equipment and software, and mensuration devices.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of an instrument maker apprentice program, and journey-level experience in instrument making, fabrication, and/or machining, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous management of staff in a specialty trades setting.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
