Job Summary:

The Department of Physics consists of 400-500 people, provides a collegial and supportive environment, and values work-life balance. The Physics Instrument Shop is the largest Instrument Shop in the central campus area. It is a one-stop, multi-service facility, providing computer controlled machining, mill and lathe, ultra-high vacuum welding, aluminum vacuum welding, basic welding & machining, fine-instrument repair, replication/modification of existing parts or devices, vacuum pump repair. Instrument Makers work on development, manufacture, assembly and testing of complex scientific instrumentation.
This position supervises 4 full time instrument makers, manages the stock and ordering, manages the job intake and progress, and participates in machining when needed.


Responsibilities:
Directs the design, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of research instruments and equipment to support lab research and instruction goals. Recruits, trains, and manages performance of instrument makers and technicians and manages budget to support instrument shop operations.
  • 25% Directs the design, development, testing, and maintenance of highly specialized instruments and mechanical systems
  • 5% Diagnoses issues, analyzes data and recommends protocol changes or improvements to assure quality and align with the strategic plan and unit objectives
  • 45% Supervises, plans, and directs operational activities of unit or program staff and resolves routine and non-routine personnel issues
  • 5% Trains staff and stakeholders on processes and procedures occasionally
  • 5% Directs the selection of materials and components with respect to physical properties, cost, and established guidelines
  • 10% Develops and audits the unit or program budget
  • 5% Serves as the main point of contact and unit liaison relaying technical information and developments to internal and external stakeholders

Education:

Required:
Associate's Degree from an accredited machining program in Machine Tool Technology.
Preferred:
Bachelor's Degree with substantial machining experience.


Qualifications:

Required:
- At least 3 years of experience related to repair and maintenance of equipment and space is required. At least 5 years of experience is preferred.
- The ability to organize, track and delegate projects is required.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse population is required.
Preferred:
- Journey level experience
- Prior supervisory experience

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $80,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $80,000 to $90,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
