Position Summary
The Department of Sociology and Community Development invites applications for a three-year renewable Instructor position beginning August 2024. This position is responsible for teaching 15 credit hours per semester, which may include classes during the day or evening. A minimum of 6 credits will taught in-person on campus; additional classes may be in-person, hybrid, or online. The successful candidate will offer introductory and upper-division courses in the Sociology and Community Development curriculum. Responsibilities may include course development and course updates and actively contributing to the undergraduate teaching mission of the department.
Requires a willingness to be involved in activities including professional development, committee membership, curriculum review, academic assessment, and participation in systematic planning for program evaluation.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
• Teach on ground, hybrid or online courses in introductory sociology and advanced courses in the candidate’s area of expertise
• Serve on departmental committees
· Meet weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
• Contribute to the growth and development of the department through recruiting activities

• Develop and implement evaluation and assessment techniques that are appropriate for each course.
• Be available, knowledgeable, and demonstrate proficiency in the practice of academic advisement of students.
· Meet weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
• Serve effectively on committees and other appropriate functions that assist in University governance.
Physical Requirements
Ability to teach on ground classes that may last up to 1 hour and 20 minutes each.
Required Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Sociology or similar field. (Preference will be given to degree in sociology)
• Demonstrated competency in teaching introductory Sociology by at least two (2) years of teaching experience at the university level.
• Evidence of potential ability in scholarly and creative achievement, and/or professional contributions and activities.
• Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and the community.
• Evidence of good character, mature attitude, and professional integrity.
• A background search will be required of the successful applicant.
