Summary

Instructor- Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant)

  • Cares for both outpatient and inpatient pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) patients on a rotating basis. Works as part of team including Attending BMT physician and potentially with a BMT or Hematology-Oncology fellow to provide care for current and new inpatients and outpatients. 
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds while inpatient including medical, nursing and pharmacy personnel to provide optimal patient care. 
  • Provides all patient care for patients including but not limited to conducting the outpatient visit, physical exam, medical counseling, and documentation.
  • While inpatient, provide all care for assigned patients including physical exam, documentation, calling consults, order writing, completing admission and discharge paperwork.
  • Participates in twice daily sign out process with oncoming/off going teams while inpatient.
  • Works with outpatient attendings to manage care of outpatient pediatric bone marrow transplant patients of all ages.

Job Purpose

Provides advanced patient care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.


Job Duties
  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation or Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC). Nurse Practitioners must have a Pediatric Acute Care certification.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Prior to employment start date must obtain appropriate license in the state of Texas and National Board Certification.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certifications.
