Position Summary
The individual in this position will report to the Department Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering (WSCOE) and support the educational mission of the CBE Department in providing high-quality instruction, outreach, and support of a teaching laboratory for the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree in Biomanufacturing and Biotechnology.
They will be appointed in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and will provide leadership in curriculum development and delivery. This will include teaching face-to-face and online courses in the Biomanufacturing and Biotechnology degree program, as well as complementary short courses and workshops, at the CSU Spur Campus in Denver. In addition, they will also recruit students into the PSM degree program, liaise with local and regionally influential industrial partners, help students identify internship opportunities, and perform educational outreach to the general public, in cooperation with education and outreach staff at the CSU Spur campus. Since the PSM degree in Biomanufacturing and Biotechnology is designed to attract working professionals, and since some outreach activities are designed for engaging the general public, some teaching and outreach will be performed on evenings and weekends.
The individual selected for this position will be assigned one of six non-tenure track faculty titles based on education and experience.
  • A selected individual who has a Bachelors or M.S. will have the title of Instructor, Senior Instructor, or Master Instructor, based on years of experience:
    • Less than 5 years of experience = Instructor
    • More than 5 years of experience = Senior Instructor
    • More than 10 years of experience = Master Instructor
  • A selected individual who has a PhD will have the title of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, based on years of experience:
    • Less than 5 years of experience = Assistant Professor
    • More than 5 years of experience = Associate Professor
    • More than 10 years of experience = [Full]Professor

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date of April 3, 2023. The department will not sponsor a visa for this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE JOB INCLUDE:
Teaching – 75% of the time

  • Teach required laboratory courses in the PSM in Biomanufacturing and Biotechnology program, specifically CBE 505A (Biochemical Engineering Laboratory) and CBE 505B (Bioseparations Laboratory).
  • Teaching may also include additional existing or new courses in the PSM program (e.g., CBE 504-Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering, CBE 522-Bioseparations), and offering these courses in formats and schedules that enable working professionals to engage in the coursework.
  • Teaching also broadly includes maintaining the teaching laboratory and contributions to curriculum development.


Service and Outreach – 25% of the time

  • Participate in standing CBE committees, and/or other department ad hoc committees;
  • Cultivate relationships with local and regional employers.
  • Coordinate with education and outreach staff at the Spur campus to recruit students to the PSM program and to conduct outreach to the general public.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelors in Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, AND 10 years of relevant experience
    OR
  • MS in Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field;
  • Fundamental knowledge of modern biomanufacturing technology, including:
    • enzyme kinetics,
    • fermentation,
    • cell culture,
    • bioprocess design,
    • bioprocess control,
    • bioseparations, and
    • protein purification.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • PhD in chemical engineering or a closely related field;
  • Five or more years of laboratory instruction experience;
  • Non-academic experience in bioprocess engineering/biomanufacturing.
