Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The faculty of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for one full-time non-tenure track Instructor of Semitic Languages, with emphasis on Arabic, beginning August 15, 2024. This is an annual appointment that must be renewed each year, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
The successful candidate will teach introductory through advanced Arabic language courses in Modern Standard Arabic and conversation classes in an Arabic dialect (Egyptian or Levantine preferred). The successful candidate will maintain an excellent record of teaching while actively engaging in various instructional responsibilities and participating fully in program affairs and services. They may also be assigned service duties, dependent upon the applicant’s experience and departmental needs.
Required Education and Experience
Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Semitic Languages, Arabic, or a related field, in hand by August 16, 2024; evidence of two years of successful teaching experience at the collegiate level of Arabic as a foreign language; native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and at least one Arabic dialect (Egyptian or Levantine preferred) and English are expected. Experience teaching Hebrew is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Semitic Languages, Arabic or a related field. Ability to also teach Hebrew and Biblical Hebrew strongly desired.
