The Department of Construction and Operations Management in the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering at South Dakota State University invites applicants for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the academic rank of Instructor in Concrete Industry Management with a tentative begin date of August 2024. The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at South Dakota State University is one of only five such programs in the country. Due to the growth in the Construction Management and Concrete Industry Management programs, the department name will be officially changed to Construction and Concrete Industry Management (CCIM) on July 1, 2024.  CIM is a business management program focused on the concrete industry, candidates with a thorough understanding of business and concrete is crucial. This position is supervised by the program director of the Concrete Industry Management program. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 9 Month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.  
 
The current COM department finds its home within the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, one of the eight colleges at South Dakota State University. The vision of the College is to be a nationally recognized, regionally relevant, student-centered, and accessible land-grant college, and achieve the university’s mission of providing a rigorous, practical education oriented toward problem-solving, conducting world-class regionally relevant research, and providing technical assistance to existing and emerging business, industry and government.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teaching undergraduate level courses and/or laboratories in concrete related disciplines.
  • Serve as an undergraduate academic advisor.
  • Serve as a mentor/advisor to student design competition teams.
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees as assigned. 
  • Participate in departmental service and operations activities (such as student recruitment, student orientation, assessment, faculty committees, etc.) as assigned. 
  • Perform functions related to undergraduate program coordination, as assigned. 
  • Other duties assigned by the program director.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise instructional lab assistants and other technical/program support personnel as necessary.
 
SALARY RANGE:
The salary range for this position is commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays.  Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of experience in construction or related industry, or Bachelor’s Degree in Concrete Industry Management with at least 2 years of experience in the concrete industry.
  • Potential or ability to develop course content and teach at the collegiate level.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire and a willingness to travel. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Masters’ degree or higher in a construction related field accompanied by relevant concrete or construction industry experience.
  • Documented evidence of teaching experience.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience with conducting concrete trial batches in a lab setting.
  • Active affiliation with industry organizations (ACI, NRMCA, etc.)
