The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time position of Instructor of Lecturer of Swahili with a start date of August 16, 2024. This is a full-time 9-month appointment, non-tenure track position, renewable yearly contingent on availability of funding, strong performance reviews and healthy enrollments in classes. Salary is commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of six courses per semester. Duties include grading, holding office hours, attending meetings, planning and overseeing extra-curricular activities, organizing special events (such as languages days, film nights, conversation tables), and promoting the program through flyers and informational sessions, as applicable.
Candidates who are ABD or hold a Master's degree level will be considered as an Instructor. Candidates with a PhD in hand will be considered as a Lecturer. Professional level competence in both Swahili and English is required. Experience in language teaching and at least a Master's degree are required. A specialization in Swahili or experience with teaching Swahili as a foreign language, particularly at university level is required. Candidates with evidence of successful teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, summer/intensive teaching experience will be given preference.
