Job Summary:

The Department of History invites applications for a full-time (0.9 FTE) Instructor at the International College Beijing (ICB) beginning in Fall 2024. We seek to hire a colleague who can teach a wide range of History courses to support the core liberal arts curriculum and deliver the history minor, such as Introduction to Modern European History, US History to 1876, and US History since 1876. Above all else, we seek a dynamic teacher committed to best practices in student-centered pedagogy and advancing intercultural historical learning to support students in developing critical thinking skills. ICB is a unique international collaboration, so the ideal candidate will teach and mentor students to see how history connects to their lives, remaining open to the surprises that intercultural exchange can bring. 

 

The teaching load is 8 courses per academic year (4 in fall and 4 in spring). The instructor is responsible for teaching a range of history courses and will also assume 10% of their duties in service roles selected in consultation with the Department Chair. These service roles may include advising students on the history minor, serving as Faculty Director of student clubs at ICB, corresponding with ICB students transferring to Denver, and other tasks in conversation with the Chair.

Instructors receive an allowance to purchase airline tickets to and from Beijing (the first ticket to Beijing is covered by the university), international health insurance, and the option of free on-campus housing or discounted on-campus housing at higher levels of accommodation. Semesters are 15 weeks long; semester start dates are based on the lunar calendar with fall semesters beginning early to mid-September, and spring semesters beginning in mid-January to early-February.

 

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire. Based on certain employee situations, we may not be able to hire candidates directly as CU employees and may need to use a Professional Employment Organization (PEO) to complete the hire.

 

Faculty hired to teach at ICB must be able to meet the requirements to obtain the Z Visa to work in China (http://english.gov.cn/services/workinchina/ ); our understanding of these requirements include holding a Master’s degree or above, demonstrating at least 2-years teaching experience, and holding a graduate degree that matches the area that the applicant will teach. Under these Chinese rules, the maximum age of candidates seeking a work Visa is 59. These requirements are subject to change by the Chinese government without notice.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

  •  Master's degree in U.S. History, European History, or a related field
  • 2 years of teaching experience
  • Independent teaching experience

  Preferred Qualifications:

·         Experience teaching at a four year college/university and abroad

Competencies:

·        Flexibility in course offerings: ability to teach courses in the history of the US, Europe, and at least one other region of the world [ie, Africa, Latin America, East Asia, etc] or global history

·         Proven record of teaching excellence

Anticipated Pay Range:

The hiring range for this position has been established at $50,000 - $54,000 at 90% time.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
