Position Description:

The Department of Cinematic Arts at the University of Iowa invites applications for two Instructional Track faculty positions in Film & Video Production beginning August 2024. Responsibilities include teaching three undergraduate courses per semester, mentoring and supervising graduate students, and participation in departmental service.


This is an exciting time to join a thriving department of Cinematic Arts. Our department offers two BA degrees in Cinema and Screenwriting, which together serve more than 500 majors and minors. We also offer graduate degrees in Film & Video Production (MFA) and Film Studies (MA and PhD). For these positions, we are seeking excellent instructors whose teaching specializations can complement existing program strengths and contribute to the future development of Film and Video Production at Iowa.


The initial appointment is for three years, subject to annual review. Instructional-Track positions are renewable and include opportunities for promotion on a career ladder with longer appointment intervals.

Education Requirement:

  • M.F.A. in Film & Video Production or related area in hand by start date.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching

  • Ability to teach courses across the Film & Video Production curriculum, including our large introductory survey; intermediate courses (in narrative fiction, nonfiction, and alternative forms); and various advanced topics (image design, sound design, editing, etc.)

  • Ability to mentor graduate students and supervise graduate teaching assistants

  • Ability and willingness to take on service roles commensurate with a 20% service allocation

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Record of, or interest in, curriculum development

  • Ability to teach students to use a broad range of digital moving image cameras, digital audio recorders and post-production software, including the Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Audition, etc.), Pro Tools, Da Vinci, and beyond

  • Desire to promote an inclusive culture in the workplace and academic environment
