Job Summary
 

The Instructional Technologist helps integrate technologies, such as computers, hardware, and software, into educational settings. A key role of the Instructional Technologist is growing the use of technology in classrooms. As we move from a traditional classroom to an “enhanced traditional” or hybrid classroom, the Instructional Technologist evaluates the use of technology in the classroom and provides suggestions on improvement, as well as educational software recommendations. The Instructional Technologist also trains instructors and administrators in using the implemented technologies. Additionally, the Instructional Technologist will collaborate and build relationships with Booth Faculty Services and the University Academic Technology Solutions team.

Responsibilities

  • In support of an Instructor’s pedagogical goals for teaching, investigates innovative uses of technology in teaching and learning, and supports the use of specialized applications, equipment, and services, including face-to-face interaction as well as group, seminar, and online interaction.
  • Partnering with Faculty and Instructional Designers, promotes new learning technologies and delivery strategies to support pedagogical initiatives.
  • Works with faculty and instructional designers to experiment with emerging instructional technologies and teaching methodologies.
  • Collaborates with faculty and instructional designers on the adoption of appropriate learning technologies to advance educational goals.
  • Develops resources and services, including tailored training programs, documentation, online reference materials, learning modules, and seminars ranging from basic online course management skills to the advanced application of technology in teaching.
  • Maintains professional expertise in online teaching and learning, and technology-based course delivery including: learning management systems (LMS), multimedia and instructional course software, adaptive learning tools, multimedia presentation, web- conferencing, and classroom technologies.
  • Maintain a network of relationships with colleagues across campus, other institutions, and professional affiliations on an ongoing basis.
  • Identifies technology training needs of faculty and students.
  • With some direction from others, performs a variety of IT activities supporting an e-learning environment, such as designing curriculum content.
  • Monitors and analyzes trends, identifies opportunities, and explores innovative approaches to teaching and learning problems. Works with other units across campus to aggregate services in an academic context.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology or related field.
  • Master’s degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of professional work experience in an instructional technology/design/development position, or relevant experience.
  • At least two years of experience creating documentation and delivering workshops to faculty in the use of educational technologies. 
  • Backgroud working with faculty in a higher education environment.  Involved with hybrid and online instructional design in higher education.
  • Previous management experience.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficient with Learning Management System (LMS) and other instructional technologies to further the teaching and learning processes. 
  • Skilled in Canvas, Coursera and NovoEd.
  • Expertise with one or more digital authoring tools (Camtasia, Captivate, Knowbly, Articulate).
  • Accomplished in web conferencing software (WebEx, Zoom).

Preferred Competencies

  • Comfortable interacting with and using consultative skills with a diverse group of faculty.
  • High level of proficiency in adult/online learning theory, principles and technology and the ability to teach this information to others.
  • Comfortable and skilled communicating with a non-technical audience.
  • Work independently and as a member of a team, take initiative, and adapt to dynamic and ever-changing environments.

Working Conditions

  • Flexible work schedule with availability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Some limited international travel to Booth’s global locations.
