Job Details:

Part-time position that provides oversight and technical support to the faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and undergraduate course assistants for two undergraduate lab courses: Human Systems Physiology Laboratory (BIO 165U) and Human Microscopic & Gross Anatomy (BIO 446L). These courses are large enrollment lab courses for undergraduate students.


General Notes

The Biology Instructional Office (BIO) is an academic unit housed in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. BIO coordinates the teaching and scheduling of all courses taught by the three Biology Departments: Integrative Biology, Molecular Biosciences, and Neuroscience. BIO also develops the curriculum for entry level Biology and non-majors biology classes.


​Purpose

The Research Engineering/ Scientist Associate I position is responsible for the daily preparation of lab materials and experimental set-up for Anatomy and Physiology lab courses BIO 165U and BIO 446L. Keeps labs and storeroom clean and orderly.


Responsibilities

  • Researches, procures and maintains laboratory supplies and equipment. Responsible for setting up, taking down, and organizing equipment and materials for weekly instructional labs

  • Trains, instructs and supervises student lab assistants and support personnel in the safe use of facilities and operation of all laboratory equipment. Provides instructional and technical support for laboratory personnel and teaching assistants.

  • Interfaces with Environmental Health and Safety, Custodial Services, Biology Instructional Office staff, vendors and contractors. Maintains and cleans lab equipment and lab areas.

  • Assists course instructor in the improvement of existing laboratory exercises, troubleshooting current protocols based on graduate teaching assistant feedback, and updating procedural guidelines for those exercises.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; comfort with working independently 

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

  • Master's degree in Biological Sciences

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple projects


Salary Range

$40,000+ ($20,000+ prorated based on 20 hours per week)


Working Conditions

  • Teaching laboratory environment
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.


Work Shift

Flexible between 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
