Job Description
Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, has an immediate need for a Full-time Biology Instructional Lab Coordinator. The work schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, subject to change with department needs. This is a Bargaining, Non-exempt, Grade 27 position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Identify instructional activities that will support the instructional objectives of the laboratory.
- Organize the work and set-up equipment, instruments and tools for use by students and faculty in the lab.
- Provide direction in the facilitation of student laboratory experiences.
- Assemble and check equipment for proper operation and adjust/replace equipment as necessary.
- Monitor and replenish consumable and chemicals used in the lab.
- Maintain the laboratory and ensure that they are clean and in good order.
- Ensure that supplies and equipment is properly stored and secured, and control access to laboratory areas.
- Maintain system and applications software, peripheral equipment, boards and add-ons, productivity utilities and other special purpose software and hardware products.
- Work with the Office of Information Technology to install and test software and hardware.
- Recruit, hire, train and supervise student assistants, volunteers, and temporary staff assigned to the program.
- Coordinate and assign work, monitor and provide training on safe work practices and procedures.
- Prepare requisitions and places orders to maintain an inventory of equipment, software, materials and supplies.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, clean and orderly learning environment.
- Ensure and enforce safety in the laboratories, including dress code, PPE and collecting and disposing of chemical and biological waste.
- Frequently required to stand for long periods-of-time, frequently bend, stoop, or reach to move 10 pounds of lab equipment and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ordering and receiving laboratory materials within the limits of the departmental budget.
- Maintaining expense reports and verifying purchases as required.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of laboratory chemicals and supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in the subject area to which the position is assigned and/or the equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
- Four years of experience performing instructional assistant/associate duties
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
- Considerable knowledge of instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and recordkeeping.
- Ability to operate an instructional laboratory; to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish work assignments, using personal computers and instructional technology.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with aseptic techniques, autoclaves, maintaining cultures and operating equipment used in a microbiology lab.
- Ability to calculate and make both molar and percent solutions.
- Experience in method development and enhancing laboratory procedures.
- Continuing education in safety, health, communication or conflict resolution.
- Familiarity with chemistry and biotechnology laboratories.
Hiring Range $30.47 to $39.60 per hour. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity. Please include a and complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
