Job Description

If so, please apply to the Instructional Designer Sr. position on the Online and Digital Innovation team to help advance digital initiatives in the Office of the Dean in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (The College). This position reports to the Assistant Director of Instructional Design and Learning Technology.

The College is the largest and most diverse college at ASU, home of 18+ schools and academic units within the divisions of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. This position supports all three divisions.

This position will partner with faculty to design new courses and improve existing courses by applying the most current best practices in teaching, learning, and technology in all modalities across all of our disciplines. 

Important note: This is not a remote position. This is an in-person position on ASU Tempe campus that allows for 1-to-2 days/ week remote work after the onboarding period.

Essential Duties

  • Applies expertise in higher education learning design and online pedagogy to lead course redesign initiatives with the goal of improving student engagement, interactivity, inclusivity, and accessibility of aging, high impact online programs.
  • Provides faculty with design support and consultations on writing learning objectives and aligning course content, curating learning materials, developing assessments, recording lecture videos, scaling for large enrollments, building in Canvas, teaching online, meeting course quality standards – including accessibility and inclusivity, and maintaining course quality and relevance long-term.
  • Uses and advises faculty usage of Canvas LMS, Google Drive, Yellowdig, Playposit, and various teaching and learning tool integrations in all modalities (on-campus, online, and hyflex/Sync).
  • Resolves complex instructional, technical, and pedagogical problems via applied knowledge, research, networking, troubleshooting, learning systems and theory (Bloom’s, ADDIE, Quality Matters, culturally responsive teaching, etc.).
  • Collaborates with others (LMS administrators, security specialists, EdPlus/ASU Online IDs and technologists, and faculty program leads) to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of course design and technology resources, models, and processes. 
  • Proposes customized learning technology and design solutions for new and existing online programs with complex content and pedagogical needs. Conducts technology testing in Canvas; recommends content changes for new tool adoption.
  • Project-manages new online program/ course developments by supporting faculty and ASU Online IDs with tracking development milestones and providing quality reviews, feedback, and support.
  • Tracks learning technology pilots and usage in The College, including pricing structures and licensing. Collaborates with other colleges on tool pilots and license sharing.
  • Assists faculty with learning tool requests by evaluating use cases, ensuring tool alignment with strategic initiatives, and shepherding the security review process in partnership with the Dean’s Office Security Specialist and LMS administrators.
  • Evaluates faculty support needs; designs supplemental materials, faculty-facing communications, and support plans in anticipation of and response to the evolving educational landscape, tool changeovers, technology innovations, and social climate.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of course evaluation standards of measurement that include course quality, UDL/Accessibility/DEIB aspects, and media and technology. Assists in developing and disseminating design standards to ensure continuity so that all new or updated materials comply with existing design standards. Aligns standards to identify gaps.
  • Redesigns and maintains Instruction Junction (https://instruction.thecollege.asu.edu/ ), which is built in Drupal.
  • Serves on ASU committees and leads meetings, representing The College and the Dean’s Office in conversations about teaching and learning initiatives, and proactively reporting updates to leadership.
  • Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. Five (5) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s or doctoral degree in Learning Experience Design, Educational Technology, or related field.
  • Experience working with university faculty in an instructional design and learning technology capacity. (5 years)
  • Expertise in instructional design, including setting and managing course development milestones, writing course objectives, developing course content and assessments in Canvas, advising on video lectures, troubleshooting complex instructional/ technical problems, etc.
  • Evidence of developing a robust and diverse portfolio of online university-level courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with the Sun Devil service standards and the ASU mission.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with the Quality Matters design standards and the Peralta rubric for equity and inclusion.
  • Experience and passion for developing learning content for all learners, including those with disabilities and underrepresented populations (accessibility and Universal Design for Learning, DEIB, HSI, etc.)
  • Ambitions of career progression to Instructional Designer Principal or Manager after meeting and exceeding goals and responsibilities consistently for 2-to-4 years (depending on experience and performance).

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse at least 75 percent.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
