The Penn State Smeal College of Business  is a vibrant intellectual community offering highly ranked undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and executive education opportunities to more than 6,000 students from across the country and around the world. The Penn State Smeal College of Business is seeking an Instructional Designer to join our expanding eLearning Design and Innovation Group (eLDIG) team. We are searching for a team player who can work with instructors, the eLDIG team, and a team of multimedia specialists and programmers to create engaging learning experiences in response to Smeal’s growing online, residential, large-enrollment, and hybrid portfolios. This candidate will design and develop courses for online, hybrid, and residential instruction delivery modes. This job will be filled as a regular staff appointment at a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience. What we are looking for
  • A strong foundational knowledge of learning science and instructional design to assist faculty in the design and development of the College’s teaching and learning efforts.
  • A creative and innovative thinker with the ability to apply research-based learning and pedagogical theories, universal design principles, assessment strategies, and best practices.
  • Strong writing skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-based work environment.
  • The ability to incorporate current approaches to online learning, including problem-based learning and case-based learning, as well as maintain a constant focus on copyright, usability, and accessibility requirements and standards.

What would set you apart
  • Experience designing online and hybrid courses in a higher-education context is preferred.
  • Experience with academic teaching, current and emerging learning and technology trends, content management systems, and learning management systems (i.e. Canvas).
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations associated with ADA compliance, including sections 504 and 508, WCAG compliance, and accessibility considerations for online learning.

Education and experience
  • The Instructional Designer 2 typically requires a Master’s degree (or higher) in instructional design, learning science, or a related field plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Additional experience, education, and/or competencies are required for level 3.
