Job Description

The School of Social and Family Dynamics (SSFD) is seeking a motivated instructional designer who will collaborate with faculty, administrators, and staff in the design, development, and support of digital courses, programs, and initiatives.

ASU and SSFD are focused on the design and scalable delivery of digital teaching and learning models to increase student success and reduce barriers to achievement in higher education. Essential Duties

  • Support faculty with instructional design needs and technology issues for courses delivered in all instructional modes (online, icourse, ASU Sync, immersion) using current ASU learning management system(s) applying best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Work collaboratively with SSFD Director of Online Programs and Directors of Graduate Online Programs to support the success of SSFD bachelors and masters online degree programs.
  • Maintain communication and a collaborative relationship with our SSFD EdPlus/ASU Online Instructional Designer.
  • Maintain communication and a collaborative relationship with key SSFD staff to coordinate on specific tasks.
  • Support faculty with instructional design needs and technology issues for courses delivered in all instructional modes (online, icourse, ASU Sync, immersion) using current ASU learning management system(s) applying best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Work collaboratively with SSFD Director of Online Programs and Directors of Graduate Online Programs to support the success of SSFD bachelors and masters online degree programs.
  • Work both independently and interdependently within a team-based model to produce desired outcomes.
  • Assist faculty and graduate student instructors in the design, development, and revision of courses in all instructional modes, but particularly fully asynchronous online/icourses in Canvas, meeting the standards from the Quality Matters Rubric as well as additional EdPlus/ASU Online and SSFD guidelines. Share EdPlus/ASU Online Faculty Expectations with faculty and graduate student instructors who are new to teaching online, and assist them with meeting quality standards for online teaching pedagogy.
  • Make recommendations to faculty and graduate student instructors as appropriate for how to incorporate learning theory and best practices for teaching and learning into course development and redesign.
  • Assist in creation of inclusive learning content using Universal Design for Learning that represents and meets the needs of diverse populations.
  • Upon request, collaborate with faculty to find or create visual design elements and embed them into Canvas (e.g., dashboard images, course banners, images for lectures).
  • Upon request, provide quality assurance reviews of syllabi and courses, following standards from the Quality Matters Rubric as well as additional EdPlus/ASU Online. and SSFD guidelines. Provide suggestions on areas for improvement as appropriate.
  • Develop training materials including self-help documents and online tutorials to assist faculty and graduate student instructors with the use of course management tools, instructional design, and learning technologies.
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies that have potential value for teaching and learning.
  • Recommend effective and creative uses of technology to enhance instruction for online, icourse, ASU Sync, and immersion learning environments.
  • Provide troubleshooting and other technology support related to courses for faculty and graduate student instructors. Assist in the support of the myASU and learning management system (e.g., Canvas).
  • Remain current on ASU security best practices and policies as they relate to teaching and learning technologies.
  • Attend SSFD online/icourse teaching meetings as well as ASU meetings specifically held for IDs.
  • May assume or coordinate other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field AND Three (3) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s Degree or higher in a related field.
  • Experience with instructional design in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working in Canvas/LMS environments to developing course content: writing course outcomes and learning objectives, sourcing learning materials, designing assessments, and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Experience exploring, evaluating, and experimenting with new learning techniques and technologies and seizing new opportunities for enhancing learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning sciences (including Universal Learning Design), accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the higher education landscape.
  • Experience in using a variety of industry-leading technologies and products for effective and efficient development of content, presentations, web pages, web applications, and tutorials.
  • Experience with online course evaluation and Quality Matters best practices and processes.
  • Experience in researching and resolving technology issues.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects, prioritizing competing demands to meet established deadlines, and working both independently and interdependently.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff in a higher education environment.
  • Experience in using organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
