Job Description

Due to the rapid growth of immersion and online programs at the ASU School of Life Sciences, the Teaching Innovation Center (TIC) is seeking a talented Instructional Designer to support our instructors with building evidence-based and inclusive teaching practices into their immersion, hybrid and online courses.

Applicants should be passionate about creating high-quality biology courses in which diverse students are able to succeed. They should be able to clearly communicate current higher education trends and apply them to a variety of experiential learning situations including online, active-learning, problem-based and adaptive assignments, Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) and lab courses.

The Teaching Innovation Center is an embedded instructional design team that assists with new course development in a variety of modalities, leads innovative content design, oversees instructional initiatives from the school to ensure effective, inclusive and sustainable practices, and provides engaging professional development for instructors and teaching assistants in a variety of formats. The School of Life Sciences is considered a leading innovator in the areas of adaptive learning and virtual reality for STEM curriculum development that supports students with diverse needs.

This unique role will also partner and represent our unit with The College, University Technology Office (UTO), EdPlus, ASU Online and RISE Center to communicate unit needs, share best practices and collaborate on projects.

Flexible work options:

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.
  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.

Essential Duties

  • In collaboration with members of the TIC team, instructors, administration, and advisors, designs and develops engaging, interactive, and instructionally sound learning materials, including assignments, content, and assessments, in alignment with learning objectives and goals.
  • Supports the writing of learning objectives to incorporate content standards and curates content in support of objectives.
  • Collaborates with faculty teams to review and edit content and integrate contributions to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of design and development models and processes.
  • Develops and supports the integration of course content into Canvas (LMS) that is accessible, course activities that are inclusively designed, and a learning environment that creates a sense of belonging and connectedness by students in all modes of course delivery.
  • Evaluates training needs, designs/redesigns training programs and supplemental materials, and implements training programs to meet changing needs and objectives of the School of Life Sciences.
  • Assists with evaluation of technology effectiveness, quality assurance, editing, adapting content, and implementing recommended changes to improve learning.
  • Assists troubleshooting of course technologies with documentation and instructions for the use by faculty and students within a course.
  • Leads educational design consultations/course reviews to support instructors and teaching assistants with evidence-based teaching practices based on current research and literature.
  • Develops and maintains resources such as tutorials, reference material, design standards, content resources, templates, and tools for instructional development.
  • Remains current on, evaluates, identifies, and communicates best practices, learning theories, and instructional technologies, and incorporates these into content standards and learning objectives.
  • Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. Three (3) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. 


Desired Qualifications

  • An outspoken advocate of diversity, equity, inclusion, and the representation of underrepresented communities
  • Experience in  Universal Design for Learning and able to assist with the creation of content in alternative formats for people with disabilities.
  • Experience in building courses related to STEM and the natural sciences, including content expertise in terms of degrees or experience working with life sciences, biology, or science education
  • Experience in teaching adults either in higher education or training centers
  • Experience creating and delivering live training and instructional documentation for teaching, including but not limited to webinars, video tutorials, and blog posts.
  • Evidence of an advanced degree in Education, Instructional Design, Educational Technology or related field
  • Experience providing technical assistance to faculty in a higher education environment, including deploying and troubleshooting learning technologies within courses, such as Canvas functionality (Quizzes, Discussions, Gradebook) and integrated third-party tools used for collaboration, media sharing, and remote proctoring. (Screencast-o-matic, Cogbooks, Labster, Yellowdig, iClickers, Honorlock, Respondus, VoiceThread, Playposit, Wistia, MediaAmp)
  • Experience creating and editing video media, captioning videos, graphic design, and/or public speaking

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%).
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (5%).
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals; This position receives regular review of objectives by department administrator.
