Job Summary/Description
The position of Instructional Designer/Technologist is a full-time, exempt position at Angelo State University within the Center for Digital Learning and Instruction (CDLI). This position reports directly to the dean of the Center of Digital Learning and Instruction. The instructional designer (ID) provides faculty with support in creating engaging digital learning environments for students. The ID will work directly with faculty from various diverse disciplines to identify instructional and course goals and apply evidence-based instructional practices, taking into account the unique needs of the course, instructor, and students. The ID will assist faculty in managing the course design and development process, evaluate course design, and integrate technologies to enhance course design. Within the CDLI, the ID will provide training and resources to faculty through workshops, professional development opportunities, tutorials, etc. to promote and maintain best practices related to teaching and learning.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
Under the direction of the dean of the CDLI:
  • Provide direct instructional design support to faculty in the use of technologies associated with digital learning and instruction in online and related environments;
  • Develop and deliver ongoing training and resources to support faculty use of technology and course materials for teaching and learning;
  • Assist faculty throughout the course design process and provide feedback on research based, best practice for effective course design and delivery;
  • Assists faculty with the transition of face-to-face courses to online or related formats;
  • Collaborates in the development, delivery, and facilitation of professional development workshops related to course design, technology-enhanced instruction, and online teaching;
  • Serves as a resource to faculty on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), accessibility issues, ADA, open educational resources (OER) and copyright guidelines;
  • Upon request, serve on teams with faculty and administration to align course content with program objectives, accreditation standards, and best practices in online education;
  • Engages in ongoing, self-initiated professional development to continue to lead the university community in the best-practices and industry trends in digital learning and instruction;
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds;
  • Maintain institutional quality assurance processes, ensuring continuous improvement of course materials and instructional design practices;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Center for Digital Learning and Instruction.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to collaborate and consult with faculty to design and develop new online courses utilizing the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate) and COI (Community of Inquiry) design models and to evaluate new and existing online courses using the OLC (Online Learning Consortium) quality scorecard for continuous improvement;
  • Ability to collaborate and consult with faculty on the effective use of instructional design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional software, and systems for online course development;
  • Ability to consult with faculty members to ensure each online and/or hybrid course results in appropriate collegiate level learning outcomes equivalent to face-to-face courses;
  • Knowledge in how to research, evaluate and integrate new and emerging educational technologies for improving student learning outcomes;
  • Skilled in the planning, development and facilitation of training/workshops regarding current, evidence-based practices for effective instruction in online/hybrid courses.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology or a closely related field;
  • Minimum one year experience in the role of instructional designer in an institution of higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology or a closely related field;
  • Three to five years’ experience in the role of instructional designer in an institution of higher education;
  • Experience providing instructional design using the Blackboard LMS; Quality Matters (QM), Online Learning Consortium (OLC), or similar current certification in online course design.
