Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Instructional Course Designer for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Reporting to the Senior Project Administrator Supervisor for the Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) at NJAES Cooperative Extension, this position works collaboratively with the Instructional Technology Specialist, program coordinators and subject matter experts to create new online course offerings for OCPE and other stakeholders around the University and to update existing courses by applying andragogical principles to synchronous and asynchronous remote learning methodologies, blended classroom learning, interactive e-learning, videos, and other online learning tools designed to nurture participant engagement, foster community, and increase the participants’ retention of course content.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Responsible for these areas within OCPE: course design, accessibility, universal design for learning (UDL), synchronous and asynchronous course delivery, assessments, course and instructor evaluations, and the creation of clear course learning objectives consistent with Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  • Serves as a technical resource for the office, particularly in maintaining and troubleshooting courses hosted in the Canvas Learning Management System (or other systems that may be adopted by the university), creating training materials, and providing workshops and hands-on training for OCPE staff and instructors in support of the overall mission of the Office of Continuing Professional Education and Rutgers NJAES Cooperative Extension.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in instructional design, education, user design, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Also requires a minimum of two years’ experience in instructional course design preferably within higher education.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and successful completion of the university’s defensive driving program upon hiring.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design, adult learning principles, interactive and user experience design, and course development best practices for educational programs.
  • Working knowledge of basic accessibility and UDL guidelines.
  • Requires a strong understanding of the Canvas learning management system—the current LMS used at Rutgers University—and the ability to quickly pivot should the university adopt a different LMS.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with clients effectively and efficiently to create quality training materials.
  • Strong analytical, proactive technical troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent follow-up, time management, and organization skills including ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • First level Quality Matters certified or equivalent such as OLC’s OSCQR Course Design Review.
  • Proficiency with the Canvas Learning Management System including SCORM integration and configuration, Cidi Labs DesignPLUS for Canvas, Qualtrics, PlayPosit, Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, HTML, and other learning tools.
  • Proficiency with design tools including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Canva.
Equipment Utilized
  • The position requires the regular use of a computer and expertise with the following software: Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; Canvas Learning Management System, Cidi Labs DesignPLUS for Canvas, Qualtrics, Kaltura, Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, as well as various instructional technology media, including AV equipment and technology for web-based course design and delivery. Position may require additional use of course-authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Powtoons, or Camtasia, design software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Canva, and nonlinear video editing software such as Adobe Premiere.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Occasional travel to offsite meetings is required (Rutgers does not control the accessibility of non-Rutgers locations, but the majority of meeting sites are at University and State / County / Local government buildings that offer access ramps, elevators, etc. to assist those with mobility limitations).
  • No specific dress code is defined, but this position is expected to dress professionally for meetings, conferences and classes with internal and external clients.
  • This position may occasionally be required to work outside of normal business hours to manage response to mission-critical, time-sensitive issues.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
