Job Summary
Working closely with the Assistant Director and/or Principal Institutional Space Planner, provides technical expertise for campus leadership and participates in deliberations of committees for space planning. Supports the Assistant Director and/or Principal Space Planner by providing complex analyses to support space program justifications including analyses related to proposed space moves/renovations to ensure overall campus objectives are met. Works with campus units regarding space planning. Develops, promotes, and implements solutions that enhance campus-wide reporting of facilities and space data. Develops and applies space standards to inform departmental space planning, develops models, and conducts studies to ensure best practices and the most efficient use of space. Supports campus departments in business processes related to space management systems, including Archibus.
Department Description
The organization of UCSF Real Estate is focused on the development, planning, delivery, and management of physical space for UCSF. UCSF Real Estate is an integrated unit that enables the alignment of development, planning, design, construction, and management of all spaces across UCSF. UCSF Real Estate provides these services through the following Departments: Campus Design and Construction, Campus Planning, Real Estate Services, Health Design and Construction, Health Major Capital Projects, and Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Capital Program Management.
The combined UCSF campus and UCSF Health organizations include approximately 130 UCSF and 39 contract personnel; operating/recharge budgets of more than $45.2M per year; current year capital project expenditures of $450M; and oversight and responsibility for > $2.6B long-range capital development.
This position resides in Campus Planning which is responsible for all UCSF Campus and UCSF Health Physical Planning, Space and Capital Planning:
- Provides professional planning services that guide the physical development of the campus and assist in strategic development and improvements of buildings and space to support UCSF's mission of research, teaching, health care, and public service.
- Maintains the Long-Range Development Plan (LRDP) for UCSF campus sites, develops land use plans, site, and new facility evaluation, and conducts environmental analysis to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
- Assesses campus space needs and requirements, and annually updates the campus Capital Improvement Program that draws upon the state, non-state, and campus discretionary resources to fund capital projects
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in facilities planning, institutional research, urban planning, architecture, business administration, or related area and / or equivalent experience training.
- 4-5 years progressive relevant experience
- Thorough working knowledge / skill in space planning, space management, functional space programming, architecture, city planning or other space-related fields.
- Strong analytical and project management skills and demonstrated ability to use good judgment in selecting models and techniques to resolve issues and develop solutions. Skill at
working with great accuracy of detail and concentration both quantitatively and conceptually with ideas and figures. - Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen. Ability to employ interpersonal skills in situations calling for tact and diplomacy. Skill at clearly communicating information to a wide variety of people (including executive leadership) in written form, in person, by phone, and by videoconference.
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative team as well as accomplish tasks individually.
Strong knowledge in applying space standards. Ability to program
facilities using appropriate standards, analyze adequacy of existing space, and making projections based upon standards. - Strong knowledge of space planning and programming and analysis concepts,.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong ability to take initiative in developing, researching, and writing special studies and projects in addition to responding for requests for information from campus leadership
- Strong working knowledge and experience in preparation of space planning studies that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; ability to function with some autonomy.
- Strong skills in analyzing complex information using a wide variety of computer software tools including spreadsheets, database applications, word processing and graphical tools.
- Strong knowledge and skill in committee support and advisory functions as well as ability to write concise and detailed agendas and minutes of committee meetings for distribution to
campus faculty and staff. - Strong skills in analyzing complex information using a wide variety of computer software tools including spreadsheets, database applications, word processing and graphical tools.
- Strong skills with graphic programs (e.g., Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Illustrator, and InDesign) and concepts. Experience in working with architectural drawings/floor plans.
- Knowledge of space planning/management systems (such as Archibus) functionality
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of research laboratory planning or space programming
• Experience working in higher education.
