About The Position:
The Inspector conducts, supervises, and manages investigations of campus-related criminal misconduct and/or violations of campus policy. Responsibilities include the oversight of complete, accurate, and thorough investigations that occur utilizing current technology, recognized best practices, proper evidence collection, analysis, security, storage, and disposal, to ensure case integrity and victim resources are available and provided appropriately. In addition, the Inspector assists with records management, reporting and recording systems, department technology, training, and Clery compliance. Also included is assisting University Police administration to identify crime trends or crime-sensitive locations through data analysis. The Inspector serves as a liaison with law enforcement partners, the Title IX Coordinator and the District Attorney’s Office. The effective supervision of department members in regard to investigations, community policing, crime prevention, specialized units, and/or in emergency situations is also expected. The Inspector also performs specialized assignments as directed by the Chief of Police to fulfill the mission of the department. In the absence of the Chief, the Inspector serves as the highest-ranking member of the department and is responsible for the overall operations of the department.
The University Police Department (UPD) provides law enforcement services to protect the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the university. We are part of the Enrollment and Student Success division, which supports a student’s entire collegiate experience from the point of admission through to graduation. We partner with students, faculty and staff to provide a network of opportunities and services that lead to student success. Collectively, the division of Enrollment and Student Success positively influences the health, safety, and well-being of the student body. Required Qualifications:
  • Valid NY State Municipal Police Certificate
  • Associate degree; OR 60 college credits; OR 30 college credits plus military experience
  • Fifteen (15) years minimum progressive law enforcement experience with at least 10 years in an investigatory capacity including supervisory experience
  • Possess specialized knowledge and demonstrated experience in the areas of sexual assault investigations, Title IX complaint investigations, trauma-informed interviews, and computer crime investigations
  • Demonstrated police operational and leadership skills
  • Proven record of effectively managing and completing complex investigations and presenting them successfully to court
  • Experience developing investigative strategies
  • Expertise in preparation and review of various search warrants and in performing effective interviewing techniques, including trauma informed interviewing
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate subordinates in a constructive, disciplined manner including experience teaching and mentoring staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to participating in and promoting ongoing education, training, and professional development.
  • Community policing service and a demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with marginalized populations through social justice initiatives
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Ability to successfully complete a background investigation that includes fingerprinting
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, holidays, weekends, on call, and recall as needed
  • Residency within a thirty-minute response time to the university within 30 days of appointment
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators from diverse backgrounds
  • Expertise in the Clery Act, including the counting of crime statistics and preparation of the Annual Security Report.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a university police department, working with and serving diverse populations
  • Prior management of a student workforce
  • Ability to assist with budget preparation
  • Working knowledge of NYS Education Law 129B
  • Demonstrated practice of procedural justice and principled policing
Salary (Applicant View)
$85,000 minimum, plus excellent benefits . Position is not overtime eligible.
