Position Summary

The Innovations Portfolio Manager is responsible for managing the design, development, and implementation of new health innovation products and services at DIHI. This position will perform both product management activities to ensure successful execution of product development efforts and research coordination activities to conduct relevant and appropriate research to accompany newly developed products and services. This position will work directly with experts across disciplines, including regulatory and compliance officials, clinicians, data scientists, data engineers, software developers, and health system leaders to design, develop, and implement new health products and services. For newly created products and services, this position will also manage the completion of appropriate validation and impact studies to build the scientific basis to drive adoption.

This position will work directly with the DIHI program director to ensure that products and research align with Duke Health strategic priorities while also ensuring that the end-user needs are meant. For externally funded projects, this position will align project activities with priorities of funders and partners. This position will oversee the entire life cycle of their assigned products and services, from defining the problem, conducting human centered design research, designing and developing the solution with technical experts, and implementation of the innovation to assess impact. This position will manage capacity and scope of product and research efforts and strive to create superior user experiences. This position will be accountable for the success of cross-functional teams developing products and services and proactively seeks user and stakeholder feedback to inform and guide product and service development. This position will advocate for end-users and ensure that products and services solve real pain-points. This position will establish deep partnerships with business and clinical stakeholders to ensure that products and services achieve requirements and align with the strategic priorities of Duke Health and external funders. This position will manage product and research schedules, scopes, and budgets to ensure successful execution of projects.

Duties and Responsibilities of Position:

  • Product and Service Management – 40%
    • Develops and oversees timeline, milestones, budget, and scope for prioritized product and service development efforts
    • Leads cross-functional, interdisciplinary teams including clinicians, health system leaders, internal and external regulatory and compliance officials, and technical experts to successfully build products and services
    • Works directly with DIHI Program Director to ensure that products and services align with overall Duke Health and partner strategic priorities
    • Identify opportunities to leverage relevant internal and external capabilities and expertise to support project execution
    • Oversees and supervises trainees who support DIHI product and service development efforts
  • Research Management – 30%
    • Identifies opportunities to validate and assess impact of novel health products and services
    • Seeks input from relevant experts and stakeholders to design research studies that build the scientific basis for novel health products and services
    • Manages the dissemination process, including peer-reviewed publication, presentation at national industry conference, and interactions with press for product and service related research
    • Identifies potential internal and external partnership opportunities to further bolster the scientific basis for adoption of the health innovation product or service
  • Stakeholder Engagement – 30%
    • Develops deep relationships with internal and external clinical and operational stakeholders
    • Proactively seeks feedback and input from diverse stakeholder groups to ensure that product and service development efforts solve important problems within the health system

Preferred Education

Masters degree in business, public health, health policy or related field is required. While a masters degree is preferred, candidate with a bachelors degree and four years of full-time relevant work experience will be considered.

Experience

Position requires four years related experience. Work experience can be accumulated during graduate studies.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong background leading complex projects that span multiple disciplines
  • Experience conducting health or policy-related research with domain experts, including academic dissemination and presentation
  • Experience engaging diverse stakeholders to define common objectives and drive teams towards measurable success
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Healthcare/research industry experience required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within the health or consulting sectors.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree. Additional training in Project Management coursework or certification in Project Management is desired.

Experience

Four years of progressively responsible experience in project OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE management, including complex projects involving multiple functional groups. Experience in medical education/publishing, clinical research, or medical product development is desired.
