Description of Work Unit
The Division of Information Technology, the central IT organization for Colorado State University-Ft. Collins, supports the land-grant heritage of the institution as well as the university’s missions of teaching and learning, research, and service. The Division of IT is responsible for delivering enterprise and campus focused IT services for the Ft. Collins campus as well as throughout the CSU-System. Areas of responsibility include Research IT, Application Development and User Support Services, Academic Technology, Cybersecurity & Privacy, Networking and Telecommunications, Infrastructure and Databases, Business Intelligence and Data Integrations, Administrative Applications, and Student Applications.

Position Summary
This position monitors, evaluates, and maintains systems and procedures to protect the data systems and databases from unauthorized users. May research, recommend, and implement changes to procedures and systems to enhance data systems security. Implements and supports the security solutions and technologies to protect the environment from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, destruction, modification, or disruption. Analyzes system services, operating systems, networks and applications from a cybersecurity perspective, discovering security issues that appear under existing and new threat scenarios.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.
  • At least 3 years of information security or network security experience.
  • Experience working with security infrastructure or tools which may include any of the following: network firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, VPNs, network access controls, or authentication systems.
  • Technical background to identify threats to the environment, ability to propose potential solutions, and guide efforts to reduce or eliminate threats.
  • Experience investigating, troubleshooting, and communicating security incidents.
  • Knowledge of security best practices for hosts and network devices.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Knowledge of traditional security controls and technologies such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), threat intelligence platforms, security automation and orchestration, and application controls.
  • Experience administering next-gen firewall solutions.
  • Experience with VPNs, both point-to-point and remote access, including the ability to configure, troubleshoot, and provide customer support.
  • Experience implementing security controls and collaborating with risk management and compliance to perform operational security duties.
  • Ability to work as a team member in the evaluation, installation, maintenance, documentation, and troubleshooting of secure networks, systems, and application architectures.
  • Experience in identifying, creating, and documenting security processes and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze, understand, and act upon vulnerabilities identified by security tools.
  • Familiarity with network and application vulnerability assessments and penetration tests.
  • Experience with automating security tools for monitoring, response, and testing using programming or scripting languages
  • Knowledge of security compliance guidelines such as PCI, HIPPA, FERPA, etc.
  • Understanding of security audit processes and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of the OSI model layers 1-7 and network protocols
  • Applicable security certifications such as CISSP, CISA, Security+, etc.

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
- Design and configure firewall rules and security policies on multiple hardware platforms and operating systems to protect the CSU system. The platforms include Juniper, Cisco, Palo Alto, and Aruba and their respective operating systems.
- Work as part of the network and security operations team in the research, product selection, implementation, administration, and maintenance of large, complex security platforms to meet security and business needs for multiple CSU campuses.
- Monitor security systems and the campus network for irregular behavior. Make decisions about and implement preventative controls and measures to protect the campus IT infrastructure.
- Respond to and remediate cybersecurity incidents by providing investigation, identification, troubleshooting, support, and root cause analysis.
- Ensure compliance with security regulations by implementing operational cybersecurity standards and performing regular audits of the cybersecurity network and infrastructure.
- Collaborates with team members and divisional colleagues to provide input and execution of cybersecurity policies, standards, and guidance.
- Provides contributions to the strategic technical security direction for the institution and the CSU System.
- Manages incoming trouble tickets, providing tier 2 support for the campus network to isolate traffic flow problem causes, identify solutions, and recommend the best course of action.
- Serves as a project resource and provides expertise for security projects.
- Documents cybersecurity infrastructure architecture and processes.
- Participates in on-call support fur security operations
- A deep understanding of the OSI model layers 4-7 is required.
- Provides on-call support as part of the team rotation for security incidents and infrastructure.

- Works as a network team member to design, configure, install and administer network routing and switching devices for multiple campuses and sites within the CSU system.
- Understanding of routing protocols OSPF and BGP is required in addition to VLAN configuration assist in troubleshooting traffic flows and connectivity.
- Works with campus partners to recommend and implement network solutions based on customer and project needs.
- Manages incoming trouble tickets, providing tier 2 support for the campus network to isolate problem causes, identify solutions, and recommend the best course of action.
- Identifies, develops, and deploys network monitoring tools for alert detection, performance, and configuration management.
- Documents network architecture and processes.
- Provides on-call support as part of the team rotation for network infrastructure.
