The Data Lifecycle Technologies Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated information scientist specialist to support our data management initiatives including data for AI research.

 

In this exciting role, you will work with our users and scientists to build and deploy findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) repositories.  You will help develop, document, and implement metadata standards and data dictionaries, including taxonomies and data formats.  In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on some of the largest, most challenging datasets, and collaborate with computer scientists and domain scientists to build next generation data services to facilitate open science in an Exascale environment.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with curating datasets in Constellation, Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility’s open data portal
  • Collaborate on designing and developing exascale repositories
  • Assists with improving data workflows and processes
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of research data services
  • Establish data standards/conventions for Oak Ridge Leadership Facility
  • Serve as in-house subject matter expert in mapping research data to metadata standards, ontologies, and formats
  • Assist in enforcement and governance of data standards/specifications
  • Deliver new information management capabilities that execute on ORNL’s leading data infrastructures
  • Participates in national and international working groups

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science with 2+ years of related work experience or Masters of Science with 1+ year of related work experience.  Degree area should be in a related field of study as it relates to this job posting.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Self-starter with understanding of research data landscape
  • In-depth understanding of research data management lifecycle
  • Metadata implementation using controlled vocabularies and domain standards to optimize user experience of data discovery systems
  • Good understanding of Python, SQL, XML/JSON, and related languages/toolsGood understanding of data repositories
  • Understanding of metadata quality control, cleanup, editing, enhancement, migration, and mapping, including the use of automated routines for metadata maintenance
  • Track and evaluate new standards, technologies and trends in digital data repositories
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other appropriate stakeholders
  • Effective written and oral communication
