Job Summary:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated qualitative researcher to join the Claw Indigenous Genomics and Ethics Laboratory at the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine within the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting Dr. Katrina Claw as needed. This includes various mixed methods research including, but not limited to, development of codebooks, coding of interviews and focus group data, data analysis of qualitative and survey data, hosting deliberative discussions and community meetings, and other methods according to established projects in the lab.

 A full-time position is available to assist with the ongoing mixed methods projects researching the cultural, ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic research projects in Indigenous and other historically underrepresented communities, and it’s relation to health, disease, and personalized medicine. Dr. Claw will personally provide training in ethical research and community-based participatory research approaches. Opportunities to work with Indigenous communities may be available.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders in the area of ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic (ELSI) research projects and data analysis.
  • Perform scientifically rigorous data management and qualitative analyses.
  • Creatively and effectively integrate data from multiple sources (e.g. qualitative and quantitative) to accelerate discoveries.
  • Assist with the design and development of mixed methods (e.g., qualitative, deliberative) and bioethical projects.
  • Assist with subject recruitment efforts, including communicating with participants expressing an interest and all pre-screening/screening activities.
  • Assist in conducting key informant interviews, focus groups, deliberation groups, and coding and analysis of qualitative data.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • One (1) year data management and bioinformatic analyses experience.

Senior Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Two (2) years data management and bioinformatic analyses experience.

Principal Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Three (3) years data management and bioinformatic analyses experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health or related field.
  • One (1) to four (4) years of experience analyzing data using high-performance computing.
  • Previous experience in research/evaluation project management.
  • Previous experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection, data management, and analysis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of basic methodological principles relevant to qualitative research.
  • Expert ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply qualitative approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to use qualitative coding programs (e.g., Dedoose, etc.) and willingness to learn new programs as necessary.
  • Familiarity with statistical analytical concepts and methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Previous interaction and cultural training with tribal communities.
  • Ability to be independent, innovative, and a creative thinker.
  • Effective process and project management skills (e.g., attention to details, diligence in data recording/documentation, strict adherence to established assay protocols and laboratory policies/procedures, strong organizational skills).
  • Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and innovative scientific strategies is essential. Will have opportunities to learn more skills in bioinformatics, qualitative data analysis, and community-based participatory research.

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as:

Entry Level: $50,864 – $64,699

Intermediate Level: $55,352 – $70,407

Senior Level: $59,840 – $76,116

Principal Level: $68,815 – $87,533

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
