Summary
The role involves the creation and maintenance of custom data reports and web applications, aimed at improving operational workflow, tracking quality metrics, managing data, and supporting academic research within the Pathology Informatics Division of the Department of Pathology at Texas Children’s Hospital. The ideal candidate should have strong programming skills, particularly in SQL and Python, along with hands-on experience in front-end web development and MS DevOps. Key responsibilities include collaborating with stakeholders to establish and refine data requirements, designing effective solutions, and developing, testing, and securely deploying reports or applications.
This position is eligible to work a hybrid work arrangement within the Greater Houston, TX area.
Job Duties
- Design, develop, test, and maintain code for web applications and automated data reports, ensuring responsive and user-friendly interfaces
- Utilize SQL queries to extract data from the laboratory information system for analysis and reporting purposes
- Coordinate scheduled database extracts (ETLs) and deploy scheduled reports or applications
- Utilize Microsoft DevOps for code versioning, collaboration, and deployment
- Document code and custom applications
- Apply knowledge of the Epic EHR and Epic tools to enhance data processing and reporting capabilities
- Collaborate closely with users to understand and define requirements for custom web applications and data reports
- Follow a structured approach: discuss requirements, design, develop, test, iterate, deploy, and document
- Provide user support addressing technical issues and maintaining secure access to applications
- Develop data visualizations to communicate quality metrics, trends, and research findings effectively
- Assist in data analysis and statistical analysis for research projects and quality improvement initiatives
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Two years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Laboratory Sciences, or a related field
- Master's degree in a related field and no experience will also be considered
- Proficiency with Python and SQL
- Familiarity with healthcare or hospital laboratory data systems and data architectures is a plus
- Experience with MS DevOps for version control and deployment
- MS Power BI
- Front-end web development skills to create visually appealing and intuitive custom web applications, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS
- Data analysis and statistical analysis skills are a plus
- Other desired technical skills: MS SQL Server Reporting Services, MS Report Builder, full-stack app development, Git version control experience, Python Flask, SQL Alchemy, knowledge of web scraping libraries (Selenium, Beautiful Soup), experience with data warehouse (EDW), QlikSense, database administration, project management, machine learning tools (Tensorflow or Pytorch), desktop and app support, training/teaching, Epic Cogito reporting tools (Reporting Workbench, Slicerdicer, Radar), and YAML
- Ability to work both independently and within a team
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
