Department Description

Department Purpose

Metro IT is the IT unit within the Metro Cluster of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The Metro Cluster are administrative staff that support multiple academic departments within the college. Metro IT also supports units outside of the College. Our supported departments and units are wide-ranging in terms of technology featuring all manner of computing systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux systems, computer driven scientific equipment, and high performance compute clusters.

Job Summary

Under direction of the IT Manager, provide systems administration and desktop support to departments supported by the Metro Cluster Administrative Unit. This position will apply professional concepts, college and cluster-wide policies and procedures to resolve a variety of complex issues in Linux administration, high performance computing, security. The role will be expected to determine appropriate action within defined procedures and practices.

The environment consists of approximately 90 servers, primarily Linux, under administration. Primary role is systems administrator for servers and services deployed by the unit. This encompasses Active Directory management of users, devices, group policy; BigFix inventory management scripting and reporting for Windows and MacOS; Puppet inventory management scripting and reporting for Linux; JAMF Inventory management scripting and reporting for MacOS; Windows and Linux server installation, configuration, and management; Graphite and Grafana data collection scripting; Icinga monitoring system; MySQL and PostgreSQL database management; web application development and scripting for systems administration related work. Desktop support includes installation, configuration, and maintenance of Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops including hardware and software in accordance with Cybersafety guidelines. Research, learn, document, and teach new policies, procedures, and technologies to clients and other technical staff within the team. Work on short and long-term assignments within the IT Team.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sit for extended periods of time working at a computer terminal using a keyboard to enter and retrieve data.
  • Read CRT and LED screens for extended periods of time.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:

 

Minimum Education/Experience

  • 3+ years experience: installing, configuring, and administering Linux OS in a production server environment. Working with Linux-based management systems such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible, with a demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.

 

  • Demonstrated experience with database administration and working knowledge of database management systems and standards

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Skills to organize work effectively and achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, distribute effort among the projects, maintain a high level of productivity, ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines

 

  • Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases.

 

  • Skills to independently research, plan, test, resolve, and document technical problems using creating and innovative concepts.

 

  • Works independently and as part of a team.

 

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

 

Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Experience with Icinga or Nagios monitoring systems.

 

  • Experience with high performance computing including configuring Slurm queues, balancing loads, user management, large storage, ZFS.

 

  • Experience configuring specialized computing environments in Windows or Linux for GPU programming, multi-user environments, compiled software.

 

  • Experience installing and configuring Windows OS on server hardware.

 

  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory including Group Policy Management.

 

  • Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis.

 

  • Project management experience

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks.

 

  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
