Position Summary
  • Assists in developing and implementing programs to review and audit teaching, research and support activities involving hazardous materials.
  • Identifies gaps in projects and policies involving hazardous materials for compliance with state, federal and University regulations.
  • Maintains paper and electronic information regarding MSU research projects.
  • Assists in managing the Chemical Hygiene Plan, audit of engineering controls, and related industrial hygiene programs, services and operational activities of the Chemical Safety Team.
  • Serves as a University on-call technical advisor for and responds to emergencies and incidents involving hazardous materials.
  • Advises University units in developing and implementing internal chemical safety programs and acts as a resource on related safety matters.
  • Prepares and reviews reports and correspondence related to University safety and health issues, investigations and inspections.
  • Maintains currency in regard to chemical safety and industrial hygiene rules, regulations and guidelines.
  • Works independently to cultivate professional relationships, solve moderately complex chemical safety issues and consult with ORRS staff as needed to complete tasks.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety; three to five years related and progressively more responsible and independent work experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health/safety and chemical safety; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; ability to work collaboratively with diverse cultures and settings; ability to work current 40-hour HAZWOPER technician level or greater.


Desired Qualifications

Any one of the following: Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Specialist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, or Certified Process Safety Professional.

10+ years of experience

Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, and climbing for less than one hour daily (lifting equipment or ladders, carrying equipment and ladders, pulling cart with equipment, climbing stairs carrying equipment for testing or for inspections).

  • Exposure to human blood, serum, tissue and other body fluids, and materials covered under precautions
  • Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort)
