Job Description

INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE PROGRAM (IHP) OFFICER, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Office,to support Institute academic and business objectives with due consideration of occupational health and safety laws, federal and state regulations, and good practices.  Will function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary office serving the whole MIT community.  Responsibilities include providing EHS support to departments, labs, and centers (DLCs); conducting risk assessments, experimental reviews of active research projects, and area and/or personal noise surveys; conducting indoor air quality investigations for temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, VOCs, mold, and other potential contaminants; developing and performing new and revising existing trainings; performing ergonomic assessments; and assisting with shipping hazardous chemicals and batteries.  May perform tasks outside of primary field of study and/or experience and manage the formaldehyde and/or beryllium program.  


Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in an EHS or related discipline, e.g., engineering, physical or biological sciences, or chemistry; at least four years’ relevant experience; knowledge of industrial hygiene and general familiarity with overall EHS practices, e.g. biosafety, environmental management, safety, and radiation protection; strong technical skills and ability to perform hazard assessments and make recommendations regarding appropriate engineering controls and personal protective equipment; working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, EPA, IATA, DOT, and fire department regulations; excellent active listening, mediation, and oral and written communication skills in order to forward the EHS and overall Institute mission; evidence of leadership; ability to develop and implement well-integrated EHS programs within the workplace; basic computer and database skills; ability to collaborate with and influence people and prioritize and manage multiple projects and client needs.  PREFERRED:  master’s degree and certification, e.g., certified industrial hygienist.  Job #22752-9

Will be expected to participate in off-hours on-call rotation to respond to campus emergencies.
