Novartis is dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product is a proprietary gene therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric patients with SMA. In addition to developing a treatment for SMA, Novartis also plans to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome and a Friedreich’s ataxia.

The Research Scientist I, Vivarium, is responsible for animal care and handling including running behavioral studies, dosing and executing in vivo experiments, and tissue collection under the supervision of scientists in support of pipeline development.

What you'll be doing:
• Execute behavioral testing.
• Perform more high-level tasks necessary for the study of rodent models of disease such as animal identification by marking, breeding, weaning, and collection of tissue samples for DNA or RNA analysis.
• Organize, schedule, and execute experimental work.
• Examine data and prepare technical reports, summaries, and protocols, and quantitative analysis, ensuring experiments are well documented and comply with regulatory requirements. Assist in troubleshooting.
• Maintain and ensure safe laboratory environment and work practices. Follow standard operating procedures (SOP) and IACUC protocols. Help maintain laboratory and order common supplies.
• Ability to work collaboratively across a dynamic scientific environment, therefore excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong interpersonal skills.
• Other related duties as assigned.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $63,000 and $94,000 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Minimum Requirements

What you'll bring to the role:
• Bachelor’s degree in biomedical research, neuroscience, animal behavior, animal sciences, or similar with 0-2 years related experience or 6 years of equivalent education/experience may be accepted.
• Minimum 1 year experience in mouse handling.
• Proficiency with standard in vivo techniques in rodents, including dosing and sampling routes (e.g., po, ip, sc, iv dosing; cardiac bleeds; necropsy and organ harvest).
• Experience running rodent behavioral studies.
• Preferred - Experience with survival stereotaxic surgeries in anesthetized animals including proper pre- and post-op care.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Preferred - Previous industry experience.
