Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform research and development of numerical algorithms for immersed high-order finite element discretizations. You will design, implement, analyze and test new approaches for treatment of boundary and interface conditions in the context of shape/topology optimization and compressible shock hydrodynamics applications. In addition to numerical methods research, the work will involve development of efficient and scalable finite element software in LLNL’s MFEM finite element library. The project targets impacting practical applications of interest to the US Department of Energy (DOE), including the BLAST and LiDO codes developed at LLNL. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division within the Computing Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Research new algorithms for immersed high-order finite element discretizations on general unstructured curved meshes.
  • Analyze the theoretical stability, convergence, and conservation properties of finite element weak formulations in the context of shape/topology optimization and compressible shock hydrodynamics applications.
  • Implement and test the new methods in the MFEM finite element library, targeting flexible user interface and applicability to various applications of interest to DOE.
  • Work with application teams to incorporate, evaluate and improve the performance of the new algorithms in specific applications, such as the BLAST and LiDO codes at LLNL.
  • Collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
  • Participate in the establishment of future research directions and contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals.
  • Document complex research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of finite element methods for PDE discretizations on unstructured meshes.
  • Knowledge of immersed/embedded mesh discretization techniques.
  • Experience in developing complex C++ software in a Linux environment.
  • Ability to conduct research, as documented by publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Advanced analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills needed to craft creative solutions and independently solve complex problems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment, present and explain technical information to technical as well non-technical audiences, document work and write research papers.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of high-order discretizations and familiarity with the MFEM finite element library.
  • Experience with shape and topology optimization computations, and multi-material compressible shock hydrodynamics computations.
  • Experience in developing large-scale scientific software with MPI, CUDA or OpenMP.
