Image Analysis Research Scientist

Job Summary

The Image Analysis Research Scientist will design, create, and implement workflows to analyze and interpret spatial (2D and 3D) and spatiotemporal (4D) data collected through the Bindley Bioscience Center’s imaging, mass spectrometry, and genomics core facilities, and through the Purdue Animal Behavior Core. Collaborate with Purdue faculty and Bindley/PABC scientists and staff to conduct research in the life sciences and to develop novel technologies and tools for analysis and integration of imaging, neurobehavioral, and spatial ‘omics data. Additionally, the individual in this role will train faculty, students, and staff in the use of image processing and data analysis tools.

 

Required:

  • PhD in statistics, bioinformatics, biology, or related discipline. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in fundamental concepts in statistical data analysis, image processing, and spatial statistics, with existing image processing tools (e.g., Imaris, ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler, KNIME and one or more programming languages commonly used for data analysis (R, Python, Matlab, Java) 
  • Ability to develop reusable, self-contained, portable data analysis pipelines and project-specific code in R, Matlab, Python, Julia, and/or Java
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of basic statistical concepts, spatial statistics, and image processing, as well as analytic and machine learning approaches to spatial data or image analysis
  • Ability to quickly learn new image processing software packages dedicated to processing different optical imaging readouts
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to maintain multiple professional relationships arising from simultaneously pursued projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate statistical concepts with non-statistical researchers in the life sciences
  • Ability to operate independently in the laboratory work environment. Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research

 

Preferred:

  • Previous post-doctoral experience in biological image processing, image analysis, or spatial data analysis
  • Experience in the following areas would be beneficial: analysis of spatial ‘omics or behavioral neuroimaging data; use of cloud computing, machine learning, and IT infrastructure to manage and analyze terabyte-scale, 4D datasets; familiarity with R or Jupyter notebooks, Docker, Biocontainers, or workflow management systems (e.g., KNIME, NextFlow)
  • Understanding of modern biological imaging systems (confocal and 2-photon microscopy, light-sheet microscopy, high-content screening, etc.)
