Since 1948, the ILR School has worked with NYC policymakers, businesses, worker organizations, not-for-profits, and community groups to improve the workplace. Today, we continue to provide educational services, research, and guidance for addressing employment challenges – including the new realities created by the COVID-19 pandemic – facing NYC, New York State, and the world.
The position of NYC Outreach Communications Specialist in the NYC Extension/Outreach Division of the ILR School is responsible for providing communications support to NYC Outreach units located at 570 Lexington.
The position collaborates with NYC Outreach program directors and teams and the ILR Communications & Marketing Department to ensure consistent communication support is provided in the advancement of the ILR Outreach mission and goals.

   

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for a ILR NYC Outreach Communications Specialist – Communications Specialist C06 in the NYC Extension/Outreach Division.

What we are seeking:

We are seeking people who appreciate and will take ownership in the following, and not limited to:

  • lead and develop communication projects and oversee the implementation of comprehensive communications plans that leverage traditional and digital media
  • develop written content for articles, website postings and social media
  • design and edit e-newsletters; analyze communication indicators such as website hits to determine outreach effectiveness
  • scout, research and develop story ideas to maximize media exposure for NYC Outreach units and affiliated faculty and staff in collaboration with ILR Communications and Media Relations
  • lead projects targeted on increasing visibility and enrollment for Outreach units and programs

Team members need to have established the following:

Communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle), Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests), Brand (Cornell.edu, multimedia production), Strategic Communications (communications plans, key messaging, campus statements, social media management), and Cornellians (digital alumni publication).

Communicators in colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate with, and consult, University Relations departments. University Relations serves as a partner and resource for all unit communicators.

What we need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field and two to three years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates required knowledge and skills.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; design software including InDesign; and Photoshop.
  • Storyteller who can evoke emotion and pride in ILR.
  • Proven website management experience, including work with content management systems, especially Drupal.
  • Work effectively in a team-based environment and be able to communicate persuasively and frequently with internal and external customers both verbally and in writing while maintaining a strong customer service orientation. 
  • Ability to work productively in fast-paced environment where handling multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities, and proactively handling problems is critical to the success of the unit.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, strong editorial and proof-reading skills and high level of attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging written content on a variety of topics while under time constraints.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with key constituencies.
  • Ability to be an excellent problem solver in order to overcome obstacles and produce top-quality content.
  • Ability to travel and to work nights and weekends as needed.

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:

  • Five or more years of professional writing and communications experience
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to contribute to innovative and creative thinking that leads to solutions for communications challenges
  • Ability to create and post content to web pages using tools such as Drupal.
  • Ability to create and post social media content on channels such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.
  • Proficiency with photography and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to assist in crisis communications
